Nakira Downes (Bridgetown, Barbados/The Combermere School) of LHU’s field hockey team has been named the
www.GoLHU.com Female Athlete of the Week.
Although Downes has been one of The Haven’s top players this year she had yet to record a goal until Saturday afternoon against Vermont.
Downes carried LHU against Vermont, tallying two goals and one assist.
On Sunday against the Colgate Raiders regulation just wasn’t enough time to decide a winner.
Once the overtime period began and the teams went to 7 on 7 there was a lot of room for the speedy Downes to operate.
It didn’t take her long, just 5:28 into OT, she was able to beat the defense and rip a shot far post, past the Raider goalie.
Her OT goal led the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 record this past weekend and LHU is now 4-1 in their last five games.
The Lady Eagles are back in action this Saturday on the road at Rider University.
