Bald Eagles close out regular season with thrilling 24-19 win over Clarion; Caldwell seals it with pin at 184

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Derek Caldwell (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) earned a crucial pin at 184 to help lead the Lock Haven University wrestling team past visiting Clarion University 24-19 in a thrilling Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) dual to close out the regular season.

With the win Lock Haven wraps up the regular season 6-12 overall and 2-4 in league action. Clarion ends the season 4-10 overall and 2-4 in EWL action.

The win was an emotional one for the Bald Eagles, who took a moment prior to the start of the match to honor their five seniors, including Nick Hyatt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), Owen Wilkinson (Hartland, Mich./Hartland), Evan Kolb (Coopersburg, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), Justin Loudon (York Haven, Pa./Red Land) and Daniel Craig (Paw Paw, Mich./Central Mountain).

Lock Haven opened the match on a tear, wining the first four bouts to take a 15-0 lead.

Hyatt and Wilkinson, both seniors made the most of their last matches in Thomas Fieldhouse, earning important wins for The Haven.

Hyatt was dominant to open the match at 125 and earned an 11-2 major.

Wilkinson earned a hard-fought 6-1 win as he upset Anthony White.

Lock Haven got critical bonus points in two of those four match-opening wins. Adding to Hyatt's major was a tech fall by Matt Bonson (Lewistown, Pa./University of Virginia) at 141.

John Trumbetti (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) followed up Hyatt's major at 125 with a solid 6-2 win at 133.

Michael Khoury (Edgewater, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional) won 11-5 at 174 to snap a two-bout win streak by Clarion.

Khoury's win put Lock Haven up 18-10.

Caldwell, who normally starts at 197 for LHU brought the crowd to its feet with his thrilling pin just 1:24 in to his 184-pound bout with Scott Joseph.

The bonus points proved to be clutch for LHU, as Clarion closed things out with a pair of wins at 197 and 285.

Lock Haven returns to action on Sunday, March 6 when the Bald Eagles travel to Bloomsburg for the EWL Championships.
