SALISBURY, N.C. – The Lock Haven University softball team opened the 2011 season with a pair of wins today at the Catawba Tournament in Salisbury, N.C.
The Lady Eagles opened the day's action with 3-0 win over West Liberty and followed that up with a 4-2 win over Tiffin.
Redshirt-freshman
Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton), who missed all of last season made her long awaited debut in the pitcher's circle a memorable one.
Smith had things working in game-one, as she struck out 12. In the complete-game effort, she allowed just three hits over the seven scoreless innings.
Smith helped her own cause with a home run.
Kelsey Mullins (Binghamton, Pa./Susquehanna Valley) led the way at the plate in game one and was 2-for-3 with a RBI and stolen base.
Lock Haven took down Tiffin 4-2 in game two, thanks in large part to a complete-game, five-hitter by
Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H./Dover).
Amanda Fernandez (Cheltenham, Pa./Nazareth Academy) was solid at the plate for LHU. She went 2-for-3 with a home run.
Brittany Muthard (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), an All-Conference selection last season had a RBI double for The Haven in the win.
The Lady Eagles are right back at it tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 26) with a pair of games at the Catawba Tournament. Tomorrow, LHU takes on Winston-Salem State at 2 p.m. and Fairmont State at 6 p.m.
