Lady Eagles sweep thrilling PSAC Central doubleheader against Mansfield

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (18-7, 4-2 PSAC Central) swept a thrilling a doubleheader today at home against Mansfield University (7-8, 0-4 PSAC Central).

Both games of the PSAC Central doubleheader came down to the wire with LHU taking game one in walk-off fashion, 9-8 in extra innings before the Lady Eagles edged Mansfield 5-4 in the nightcap.

The Lady Eagles found themselves trailing 6-0 after the top of the fourth in game one, but The Haven battled back, chipping away at the Mansfield lead.

Needing three runs in the bottom of the seventh, LHU got just that.

Lock Haven posted a three-run bottom half of the seventh to take things into extra innings, but Mansfield wasn't done either and quickly took an 8-7 lead after the top half of the eighth.

With the game tied 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth it was an Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads, N.Y.Horseheads) single that drove in Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton) that put the game away.

Cacciotti finished game one 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Kelsey Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Smith pitched the final 4.1 innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory.

Game two was another nail biter as LHU had to once again come from behind to win 5-4 in thrilling fashion.

LHU trailed 4-0 early, but the Lady Eagles once again showed their heart and determination.

Lock Haven still trailed 4-1 after five, but LHU used a four-run bottom half of the sixth to secure the victory.

Smith picked up her second win of the day to improve to 9-3 on the year in the pitcher's circle. She recorded four strikeouts in the game-two win.

Bridgette Clarke (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) and Brittany Pataky (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) were both 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

After three straight days of play, Lock Haven will be off tomorrow. The Lady Eagles return to action on Friday, April 1 at 2:30 p.m. when they host No. 9 IUP in PSAC Central action.
