CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (25-11) split a pair of games today on Day 1 of the 2011 PSAC Championships.
Lock Haven opened the day with a 6-5 loss to West Chester, but bounced back and knocked off host and 20th ranked California (Pa.) 7-4.
West Chester beat Cal 4-1 in today's third game to eliminate the Vulcans.
LHU and West Chester will meet tomorrow at noon to see who advances.
The Lady Eagles used a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh of game one vs. West Chester to make things interesting, but the comeback was short lived and WCU took home the 6-5 win.
LHU trailed 6-2 heading into the final inning, but
Nicole Smith's (Milton, Pa./Milton) two-RBI single made it 6-4 and gave The Haven new life.
The Lady Eagles added one more run, but that was it for their rally.
Lock Haven's five runs came off seven hits.
Smith led the way the plate. She was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Brittany Favazza (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) was credited with two RBIs.
Smith also pitched the final two innings and struck out one.
Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H./Dover) got the start in the pitcher's circle and went the first five innings.
LHU jumped on Cal early and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
A four-run, seventh made it 7-2 in favor of Lock Haven and the Lady Eagles shut down the Cal rally in the bottom of the final frame.
Smith was once again a huge key in the win over Cal. She went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Her three-run homer in the seventh helped LHU put it away.
Smith also got the start in the circle and went six solid innings.
Lock Haven's other seven hits came from seven different players.
Tomorrow's game time is subject to change because of the predicted forecast in the California area.
