Volleyball falls in thrilling five-set PSAC Championship match to Gannon

Lady Eagles await NCAA Selection Show tomorrow (November 18) at 10 p.m.

Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (26-10) dropped a five-set thriller tonight to host Gannon University (28-5) in the PSAC Championship match at Gannon's Hammermill Center.

Lock Haven took the first two sets of the match 25-20 and 25-20, but Gannon answered to take the last three sets 25-16, 25-16 and 15-8.

LHU got off to a slow start in set one and spotted Gannon with a 6-0 lead.

The Haven found its groove however, and with the score 11-7 Gannon, LHU went on an 8-0 run.  The 8-0 run was sparked by four kills from Kaleigh Hudak (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom High) and gave LHU a 15-11 lead.

Lock Haven held the lead throughout the rest of the set and led 24-20 when Bailey Farthing (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) closed out the first set with a kill to give The Haven a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Lady Eagles held Gannon's potent offensive attack to a .075 hitting percentage in the first set.

The two teams traded points back-and-forth early in set two.  Gannon pulled ahead 10-9, but LHU again answered, this time with a 7-1 run to take a 16-11 lead.

Bethany Burns (Erie, Pa./McDowell) ended set two with an ace and gave Lock Haven a 2-0 advantage.

The Haven defense was outstanding again in the set, as they held Gannon to a .098 hitting percentage.

Gannon got off to a quick start in the third set and pulled ahead 18-11.  The Lady Eagles mounted a 4-0 run to make it 18-15, but Gannon would go on to close out the set 25-16.

LHU fell behind early in the final two sets and were unable to take either set, falling 25-16 in set four and 15-8 in set five.

Gao Xuan (Dong Ying, China/Zibo No. 10 Middle School) led Lock Haven with 16 kills in the match.

Xuan also turned in 14 digs and two aces.

Hudak finished with 10 kills for The Haven.

Farthing and Grace Novacek (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) had eight kills each and were both strong defensively.  Farthing finished with five blocks and Novacek finished with four.

Setter Alexa Garrity (Boothwyn, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) distributed 45 assists on the night.  She added nine digs and five blocks of her own.

Erin Walsh (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) posted a match-high 20 digs for LHU.

Lock Haven will await the NCAA Division II selection show, which airs tomorrow (Sunday, November 18) at 10 p.m. to determine if LHU will earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The top eight teams from the Atlantic Region qualify for the NCAA Tournament.  Lock Haven was ranked fifth in last week's rankings.
