Box Score LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (21-9, 13-3 PSAC) won its ninth straight match tonight as they downed Shippensburg University (23-10, 11-5 PSAC) 3-1 in a battle for first place in the PSAC East at Thomas Fieldhouse.
LHU and Shippensburg were both ranked in the initial NCAA Atlantic Region rankings released earlier this week and The Haven entered the match with a one game lead over SHIP in the PSAC East standings.
LHU came out on all cylinders and closed out the first set on a 10-2 run to take the set 25-13. The Haven went on to win a thrilling second set 25-23, before SHIP responded and grabbed the third set 25-16. The Lady Eagles were resilient however, and they took the fourth set 25-19 to secure the 3-1 win.
Gao Xuan (Dong Ying, China/Zibo No. 10 Middle School) led the LHU attack with 17 kills. Xuan also played well defensively and had 11 digs in the match.
Kaleigh Hudak (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom High) had a sensational game for LHU offensively, as she tallied 15 kills while posting a .500 hitting percentage.
Grace Novacek (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and
Alex Brehony (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) chipped in offensively with eight and seven digs, respectively.
Novacek also led The Haven with four blocks.
Haven setter
Alexa Garrity (Boothwyn, Pa/Cardinal O'Hara) had the LHU offense on point and she dished out a match-high 45 assists.
Erin Walsh (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and
Bethany Burns (Erie, Pa./McDowell) were both strong defensively. Walsh led The Haven with 19 digs and Burns added 14 of her own.
LHU now has a two game lead in the PSAC East. The Lady Eagles have not lost since October 12 against Millersville and will have an opportunity to avenge that loss tomorrow (Saturday, November 3) when they host Millersville at Thomas Fieldhouse at 1 p.m.
