CLARION, Pa. – In the end, Clarion University (6-7, 3-3 EWL) was awarded a controversial 19-18 win over the Lock Haven University (4-11, 1-5 EWL) yesterday in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action.

The Bald Eagles were originally declared the winner immediately after the dual ended yesterday as each team had won five bouts, but it wasn't until late last night when it was realized that Clarion and match officials had incorrectly used the “tiebreaker criteria” in determining the winner.

The match ended tied 18-18. The interpretation immediately after the match by officials was that Lock Haven won 19-18 by virtue of tiebreaker 2 (most falls in a match). It turns out that criteria 2 was not interpreted correctly. It says most falls and technical falls. Both teams had one each. That moves the match onto to criteria 3, which is total match points. Clarion wins the extra team point by virtue of a 33-28 advantage in match points during the dual.

Harry Tuner (Howell, N.J./Howell), Fred Garcia (Donora, Pa./Ringgold), Bobby Rehm (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), William Randt (York, Pa./West York) and Matt Bonson (Lewistown, Pa./UVA) were all winners for Lock Haven yesterday.

Lock Haven will return to Clarion on Sunday, March 4 for the EWL Championships.
