LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Anthony Baker (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) and
Andre Rivers (Philadelphia/Girard College) scored 14 points apiece and the Bald Eagles went shot-for-shot with one of the nation's best, but it wasn't enough as the Lock Haven University men's basketball team (0-24, 0-21 PSAC) was edged by No. 13 IUP (21-4, 18-3 PSAC) 61-53 tonight at home in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
Muhammad Amin (Philadelphia/Math, Civics and Science) was tremendous on the glass for LHU and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Seven of his 10 boards came on the defensive side, which was a huge key for The Haven all game long.
Lock Haven's play on the glass was a big part of tonight's thriller. LHU held a 32-25 advantage in rebound. Baker had eight rebounds, while Rivers added seven.
Terrell Johnson (Philadelphia/Imhotep Charter) netted seven points for LHU.
It was arguably 40 of the Bald Eagles best minutes all season as they hung tough with the one of the nation's best teams.
LHU held the lead until the 13:21 mark of the second half and with 7:07 left, Baker hit a jumper to tie the game at 49-49, but IUP pulled away down the stretch.
Lock Haven led by three at the break, 28-25, thanks to an 8-0 run to start the game. Baker's monster-dunk 1:15 into the contest set the tone for the 8-0 Haven-run. IUP battled back and with 7:51 to go, the game was knotted at 19-19.
With 5:08 to go in the opening half, IUP held its only lead in the game up until that point, 24-23.
Baker and IUP's Julian Sanders both had eight points in the first half. Rivers had five rebounds in the first 20 minutes for Lock Haven.
Lock Haven shot 47 percent from the field during the game and hit 9-of-11 free-throw attempts.
The Crimson Hawks had a pair of players in double figures scoring, including Ashton Smith, who had a game-high 21.
The Bald Eagles close out the 2011-12 season Saturday, February 25 at 3 p.m. when they host Mercyhurst University.
