Baseball splits PSAC West doubleheader at Slippery Rock; Cummings throws eight shutout innings in game two

LHU falls 20-2 in game one, but wins game two 4-0 in extra innings

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (7-15-1, 3-5 PSAC) split a doubleheader today on the road at Slippery Rock University (10-16-1, 3-5 PSAC) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

Lock Haven fell in game one 20-2.

Kevin Cressman (Huntingdon, Pa./Mansfield University) and Jay Hartman (Lewsitown, Pa./Indian Valley) had the lone hits for LHU in game one.  Cressman went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Hartman went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Ryan Henritzy (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) also scored a run for The Haven.

Kyle Schubert (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) started on the mound for the Bald Eagles in game one and threw two innings.  Ryan Boyer (Tremont, Pa./Pine Grove) threw the final four innings of the game in relief.

Carter Haponski and Graeme Zaparzynski led the Rock at the plate.  Haposnki went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Zaparzynski went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Lou Trivino threw a complete game for SRU and recorded nine strikeouts.

In game two, the Bald Eagles scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take the game 4-0 in extra innings.

Game two featured a pitchers dual, as neither team was able to score through the first seven innings of play.

Nick Cummings (Akron, N.Y./Akron) pitched a gem for LHU, as he threw eight shutout innings.  Cummings allowed just five hits and struck out four on his way to the complete game shutout.

With the game tied 0-0 in the eighth inning, LHU's bats came alive as they put together a four run inning.

Henritzy started the eighth inning off with a single.  The Bald Eagles would later load the bases with two outs and were able to score the first run of the game when Austin Botts (Seven Valleys,Pa./Wingate University) drew a walk that scored Henritzy to put LHU up 1-0.

Dakota Roof (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) came up next for the Bald Eagles and smacked a two RBI single to center field to give LHU a 3-0 lead.  Josh Jones (Neelyton, Pa./Southern-Huntingdon) drove in another insurance run for The Haven with a single of his own to put Lock Haven up 4-0.

Henritzy and Jones both had three hits in the game.  Henritzy went 3-for-3 and Jones went 3-for-4.

LHU won the weekend series with Slippery Rock 3-1, marking the first time since 2002 that the Bald Eagles won the season series with The Rock.

The Bald Eagles return to action Wednesday, March 28 when they host Juniata College in non-conference action.  First pitch at Foundation Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
