LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (25-16, 9-5 PSAC) celebrated senior day today by sweeping both games of a doubleheader against Mansfield University (20-15, 7-9 PSAC) to claim the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division regular season title.
LHU came into the day needing just one win to clinch a playoff berth and game one starting pitcher
Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H./Dover) made sure the Lady Eagles clinched early, as she led the team to a 3-0 win.
Morse went the distance in the opening game, allowing just five hits and struck out three hitters.
Five different Lady Eagles tallied one hit in the game, led by
Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) who had a two RBI single to centerfield in the second inning. The two runs proved to be all that Morse and a solid Haven defense would need.
After clinching a playoff berth in game one, the Lady Eagles took game two 5-3 and because of tiebreakers held over Bloomsburg and Indiana (Pa.), claimed the top seed from the Central division.
Erin Clary (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) led the way at the plate for The Haven in game two, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
Chelsea Edwards (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the second inning.
Sarah Schwalm (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) went 1-for-3 for the game with a double and an RBI.
Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton) was the starting pitcher for LHU and struck out four batters in five innings of work.
Morse came on in relief to pitch the final two innings and picked up the win.
The Lady Eagles will face Shippensburg University, the No. 2 seed from the PSAC Eastern division on Wednesday, April 25 at the ASA of Pa. Jake Kislan Softball Complex in Drifton, Pa. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
