DRIFTON, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (27-17) split a pair of games today on the second day of play at the 2012 PSAC Championships.
The Lady Eagles opened the day with a 14-10 loss to PSAC-Central rival IUP, but The Haven battled back to earn a hard-fought 8-4 win over Mercyhurst, eliminating the Lakers from the PSAC tournament.
The loss to IUP had a little bit of everything as the two teams combined for 24 runs on 25 hits and 14 errors.
The Lady Eagles 10 runs came off nine hits and LHU led 9-4 after three innings, IUP posted five runs in the top of the fourth and seventh innings to pick up the huge tournament win.
Brittany Favazaa (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was Lock Haven's offensive spark versus IUP. She was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run.
Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) was 2-for3 with a RBI and
Alyssa Smith (Barrington, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded two hits.
Cacciotti was at it again at the plate in the win over Mercyhurst. She hit two of Lock Haven's four home runs, which helped LHU take down the Lakers.
With the game tied, 2-2 in the top of the fifth,
Erin Clary (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Cacciotti hit back-to-back home runs, which put The Haven up for good.
Cacciotti hit a two-run home run in the top of the second and finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs and three total RBIs.
Freshman
Sarah Schwalm (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), who was sensational defensively at shortstop for Lock Haven joined the home run party with a three-run blast in the seventh that put the game away for LHU. The homer was the first of her Haven career.
Chelsea Edwards (Horsham, Pa./Horsham-Hatboro) was tough at the plate in the win over the Lakers. She was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H./Dover) struck out a pair on the way to the win and
Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton) picked up the save after the two combined for seven strikeouts in the loss to IUP.
Lock Haven advances to take on Kutztown tomorrow (Friday, April 27) at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears are ranked second in the nation, but they are coming off a 1-0 loss to Bloomsburg today.
