DRIFTON, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (28-18) picked up a huge 9-1 win over No. 2 Kutztown, but fell to rival-Bloomsburg 9-3 in an elimination-game today at the 2012 PSAC Tournament.
The Lock Haven University softball team stayed alive at the PSAC Tournament in a big way, downing rival and No. 2 Kutztown University (45-4) 9-1 in 6 innings earlier today.
In game two today, an elimination-game, the Lady Eagles fell to rival Bloomsburg (35-13) 7-3.
Bloom will meet IUP tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the championship game.
The Lady Eagles offense exploded,
Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H./Dover) pitched a gem and the defense was almost perfect as The Haven dominated KU from the opening pitch.
Lock Haven's offense was just too much for Kutztown as The Haven hit three home runs and chased Golden Bear starter Samantha Derr after just 2.1 innings of work. It was only Derr's second loss of the season, with both coming at the PSAC Tournament.
LHU took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second as
Sarah Schwalm (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) drilled a three-run home run. She finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs. The true-freshman standout, who has been sensational defensively at shortstop came into the tournament with no home runs, but the two against KU gave her three in two games.
Lock Haven also got a two-run home run from
Brittany Favazza (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), who was 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Haven led 4-1 after 5.5, but the Lady Eagles tagged KU with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Two batters after Favazza's two-run blast, Schwalm hit her second homer of the game, also a two-run shot.
Erin Clary (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and
Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) was 2-for-4 with a RBI in the win over Kutztown.
Morse scattered six hits over six innings and gave up no earned runs. She struck out three and allowed no walks.
Bloomsburg scored three runs in the top of the third and four runs in the fourth to earn the 7-3 win over Lock Haven in the elimination game.
Cacciotti hit her third home run of the tournament in the bottom of the fifth inning. Her three-run blast to deep left field put Lock Haven on the scoreboard, but that would be all the runs the Lady Eagles could produce.
Lock Haven's five hits came from five different players.
Morse struck out four and
Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton) struck out two in relief.
The Lady Eagles will now await Monday's (April 30) NCAA Division II softball selection show to see if they receive a bid to the Atlantic Region Tournament.
