Box Score LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Nakira Downes (Bridgetown, Barbados/The Combermere School) scored two goals and added an assist helping the Lock Haven University field hockey team (5-3) past visiting Vermont (0-6) 4-1 today on Charlotte Smith Field.

Downes put on a show for the home fans, as she set up The Haven's first goal, before tallying two sensational goals of her own. Both of Downes goals came after she singlehandedly split the entire Vermont defense.

Moments after LHU defender Beverly Ruhle (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) made a diving defensive save to clear the ball off the line, the ball was on Downes stick as she sprinted down the right side of the field.

Downes slotted the ball perfectly across the goal mouth, where Megan Evans (East Greenville, Pa./Christopher Dock) was on the spot to touch it home.

Evans goal put LHU up 1-0 just 9:20 into the match and Downes scored twice in the first half including goals in the 19th and 23rd minute to make it 3-0 at halftime.

Nikki Weaknecht (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) made it 4-0 in the 52nd minute of play.

Vermont got on the board late in the second half after Alana Izzo scored in the 64th minute.

Kelsey Moll (Newmanstown, Pa./Elco) made three saves in goal on the way to the win. Elaina White (Etters, Pa./Red Lion) made a pair saves as she played in the last seven-plus minutes of the game.

Today marked the first ever National Field Hockey Day, which was sponsored by USA Field Hockey with a simple message in mind; spread and increase awareness of field hockey and encourage participation nationwide.

Lock Haven returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 16) at noon it hosts Colgate.

Vermont will also take on Saint Francis (Pa.) tomorrow at LHU (1:30 p.m.).
