Walton rallies offense late, but Football falls to Shippensburg, 30-24

Lock Haven battles back from 23-0 deficit in third quarter, but comes up just short

Box Score LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University football team scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Bald Eagles fell to Shippensburg, 30-24 today in a PSAC East clash at Hubert Jack Stadium.
 
Trailing 23-0 in the third quarter, Lock Haven (2-4, 1-2 PSAC East) began to battle back behind redshirt freshman quarterback Caleb Walton (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central).
 
Walton sparked the LHU offense late in the third quarter, leading the Bald Eagles to 24 points in the final 16:49 of the game.  He finished 15-of-22 through the air for 206 yards and threw his first career touchdown, a 53-yard strike to Jeremy Cornelius (Harrisburg, Pa./Temple Univ.).
 
Shippensburg (4-2, 3-0 PSAC East) took a 16-0 lead into the halftime break thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from 2012 Harlon Hill winner Zach Zulli.
 
Shippensburg opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Drew Newcomer. With 5:31 left in the opening period Zulli threw a 13-yard TD pass to Trevor Harman.
 
With just 42 seconds left in the first half, Zulli hooked up with Quran Kent on a one-yard pass to make it 16-0. The TD capped off a seven-play, 75-yard drive.
 
The Red Raiders pushed their lead to 23-0 early in the second half when running back Blair Brooks found the endzone from 30 yards out.
 
The Bald Eagles got on the scoreboard with 3:36 left in the third quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Alex Boumerhi (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola).
 
Just 2:02 later, Walton hit Cornelius for the 53-yard score and the Bald Eagles converted the two-point conversion to make it a 23-11 game.
 
After another SHIP score made it 30-11, the Bald Eagles scored on back-to-back drives and cut the lead to just, 30-24.
 
Beau Swales (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) scored the first of the two scores on a three yard rush and Brandon Brader (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) scored from 14 yards out for the second score.  Brader's touchdown run with 5:19 to play proved to be the final score of the game.
 
Brader finished with 16 carries for 87 yards.
 
Kevin McGiveron (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier Central) led the Bald Eagles with nine tackles on the day.
 
Zulli finished 30-of-41 for 280 yards and two scores.  He added 48 yards rushing.
 
Brooks rushed for 145 yards on 16 carries and Trevor Harman caught 15 passes for 122 yards and a score.
 
Next Saturday (Oct. 19) is Lock Haven's 2013 Homecoming. The Bald Eagles host No. 17 West Chester at noon.
