Match Notes #1: Bald Eagles set to open the 2013-14 season

Bald Eagles open new era Saturday at home vs. Bucknell and Shippensburg; travel to Clarion Knight Point Open Tournament Sunday

The Lock Haven University wrestling team opens the 2013-14 season this weekend.
 
Setting the stage:
The Bald Eagles will officially start the 2013-14 season under first-year head coach Scott Moore on Saturday, Nov. 2 at home vs. Shippensburg and Bucknell. Lock Haven will also send a number of wrestlers to Clarion's Knight Point Open tournament on Sunday.
 
Lock Haven is coming off a 7-6 season a year ago and the Bald Eagles return both of their 2013 national qualifiers in Dan Neff (141) and Fred Garcia (184). Both wrestlers enter this season with individual national rankings.

Shippensburg at Lock Haven 4 p.m.
Shippensburg vs. Bucknell 5:30 p.m.
Bucknell at Lock Haven 7 p.m.

Bald Eagle notes & storylines:
  • Saturday marks the debut for Lock Haven's new coaching staff, including first-year head coach Scott Moore and first-year assistant coach Steve Fittery.
  • Lock Haven returns both of its national qualifiers from a year ago in Dan Neff (141) and Fred Garcia (184).
  • Neff was the 2013 PSAC Freshman of the Year and named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team last year.
  • Neff & Garcia are both ranked No. 15th by AWN.
  • LHU returns seven (dual) starters from last season.
  • Jake Kemerer will move up to 165 pounds this season.
  • Lock Haven was fourth at last year's PSAC Championships and fifth at last year's EWL Championships.

Last year, Lock Haven and Shippensburg met for the first time since 2001 where LHU won 51-0. Last season, the Bald Eagles used two pins, two majors and a tech fall to down the Red Raiders 40-4. Lock Haven leads the all-time series 31-2-1.

Lock Haven beat Bucknell 23-16 last season thanks to a late-match tech fall by Fred Garcia and pin at 285. The win snapped a two-match losing streak to the Bison. LHU controls the all-time series 16-2 with Bucknell's only wins coming in 2010 and '11.
