Softball splits pair of games to open 2013 season

Haven falls in opener to West Virginia State, 6-1; rebounds with 8-0 shutout of Ohio Valley

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Lock Haven University softball team opened the 2013 season today (Friday, Feb. 15) by splitting a pair of games at the Shaw University Softball Challenge at Walnut Creek Complex in Raleigh, N.C.

Lock Haven dropped its 2013 opener to West Virginia State, 6-1, but the Lady Eagles rebounded in a big way and shutout Ohio Valley, 8-0.

In game one, today, the Yellow Jackets jumped on Lock Haven early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. They tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third.

West Virginia State's six runs came off eight hits.

Lock Haven's scored one run, off three hits.

Transfer Brianna Jennings (Wyalusing, Pa./Delaware Univ.) made her first appearance as a Lady Eagle in the pitching circle. She struck out seven, gave up seven hits and allowed two runs in 5.2 innings of work.

Lock Haven got it going early vs. Ohio Valley, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second and three in the third.

The Haven's eight runs came off six hits.

Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton) and Sarah Schwalm (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) each drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Brittany Favazza had the big bat for LHU. She was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.

Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H./Dover) made her second start of the day and recorded four strikeouts in four-scoreless innings of work. She allowed just three hits.

Lock Haven is right back at it tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 16) in Raleigh with a pair of games. LHU takes on Alderson-Broaddus (11 a.m.) and Wheeling Jesuit (3 p.m.). The Lady Eagles are set for a pair of games on Sunday (Feb. 17) as well. LHU wraps up play in the Shaw Invite with games against Fayetteville State (9 a.m.) and Fairmont State (11 a.m.).
