Softball opens Salem Tournament 2-0, extends win streak to 7 games

Morse throws 2-hitter in game 1, offense explodes; A. Smith’s first-career homer sparks Haven comeback in game 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, Va.  – The Lock Haven University softball team (7-1) went 2-0 to open Salem Tournament play and the Lady Eagles extended their win streak to seven games.

Lock Haven beat Seton Hill, 8-0 in six-innings and The Haven rallied late, to drop Shepherd, 6-1.

LHU has now won seven straight games and hasn't lost since their 2013 season-opener.

In the 8-0 (6inn.) win over Seton Hill earlier today, Lock Haven posted eight runs on 14 hits and pitcher Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H./Dover) struck out four on the way to a two-hit, shutout.

Morse, who allowed just one walk, improved to 3-1 with the win over Seton Hill, who joins the PSAC fulltime next year.

Bridgette Clarke (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) was Lock Haven's biggest offensive threat in game one. She was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Five different Lady Eagles has multiple hit games in the 8-0 shutout, including Taylor Magee (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), who was 2-for3 with two RBIs.

Lock Haven found itself trailing Shepherd, 1-0 after the Rams scored in the top of the third, but Alyssa Smith (Barrington, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) had something to say about that.

In the bottom of the fifth, A. Smith tied the game with one swing of the bat. Smith led off the bottom half of the fifth inning with a solo shot to centerfield. It marked the first home run of her career.

A. Smith finished the game, 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. She added a two-run double to go along with her first career homer.

Magee was 2-for-2 and Clarke drove in a pair of runs.

Brittany Favazza (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was 2-for-3 at the plate in the win over Shepherd.

Pitcher Brianna Jennings (Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing) improved to 3-0 on the season after a seven-inning effort. She struck out a pair and scattered three hits.

Lock Haven is right back it at it tomorrow (Saturday, March 16) in Salem. The Haven takes on UMass-Lowell (1 p.m.) and West Virginia State (3 p.m.).

Game Notes:
- This weekend's tournament in Salem, Va., is being played at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex. The Moyer Complex is the site of both of Lock Haven's national championships (2006 & 2009).
Lock Haven is on a seven-game win streak. LHU hasn't lost since the 2013 season-opener on February 15, exactly one month ago today.
- The shutout of Seton Hill (8-0, 6inn.) marked Lock Haven's sixth straight win and third straight shutout. It was also the fourth shutout of the year for LHU.
