Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – The Lock Haven University softball team (8-2) split a pair of games today as the Lady Eagles took part in Day 2 of competition at the Salem Virginia Tournament.
LHU opened the day with a, 5-1 win over UMass-Lowell (3-11), but dropped game two today to West Virginia State (9-3), 9-4.
Lock Haven jumped on UMass-Lowell early, scoring four runs on six hits in the top of the first inning. With one out,
Bridgette Clarke (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) hit a solo shot to right field to give LHU a 1-0 lead.
Chelsea Edwards (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added a two-run homer in the inning to help Lock Haven jump out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.
For the game, LHU scored its five runs on seven hits as the first inning proved to be the biggest difference- maker in the game.
Edwards finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and three RBIs.
Pitcher
Brianna Jennings (Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing) improved to 4-0 with a three-strikeout effort. She allowed just three hits in seven innings of work.
In game two today, W.Va. State scored its nine runs on 12 hits, while Lock Haven managed just four runs on seven hits.
Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton) was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Edwards and
Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) both homered in the loss.
The loss to West Virginia State snapped an eight-game win streak. The Lady Eagles hadn't lost since they opened the season with a loss to West Virginia State on February 15.
Lock Haven is right back it tomorrow (Sunday, March 17) in Salem. LHU takes on No. 13 West Virginia Wesleyan (9 a.m.) and the University of Charleston (1 p.m.).

Game Notes:
- Lock Haven went 2-0 yesterday in Salem, Va. LHU beat Seton Hill, 8-0 in six innings and used a late-inning comeback to drop Shepherd, 6-1.
- This weekend's tournament in Salem, Va., is being played at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex. The Moyer Complex is the site of both of Lock Haven's national championships (2006 & 2009).
-The loss to West Virginia State snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Yellow Jackets are the only team to beat LHU this season.
- Lock Haven hit four home runs today, including two in each game.
