Baseball splits home opener with Slippery Rock; Offense powers Haven to game two win

Zuback drives in three runs in game two; Cummings picks up first win of the season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (6-10) split its doubleheader with Slippery Rock (15-6) today in The Haven's 2013 home opener at Foundation Field.

The Bald Eagles dropped game one, 3-0, before coming back to take game two, 7-3.

Slippery Rock, who entered today ranked third in the Atlantic Region, scored three late-inning runs in game one.

The game was scoreless through the first five innings of play, but The Rock plated two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to pick up the win.

Freshman Garrett Shnyder (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery) pitched a solid game on the mound in the loss.

Shnyder (0-2) allowed five hits and two runs in six innings of work.  He struck out three hitters and issued just one walk.

The Haven managed just three hits in the loss.

Jay Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley), Scott Zuback (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) and Anthony Kyne (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn State Brandywine) each had singles for LHU.

Rock starter Garrett Peterson improved to 3-0 on the year in the win.  He allowed just one hit in six innings of work.

Lock Haven got the bats going in game two and LHU erased an early 3-0 deficit to pick up the 7-3 win.

Slippery Rock got off to a quick start off of Haven starting pitcher Nick Cummings (Akron, N.Y./Akron).

John Shaffer pounded a two-run homer for The Rock in the top of the first inning and Jake Weibley followed that up with a solo shot in the second to give SRU a 3-0 lead.

Cummings (1-2) settled down for LHU after that and kept The Haven in it.  The senior right-hander allowed just two more hits over the next four innings and did not allow another run.

LHU got on the board in the third inning when Zuback hit a single through the left side of the infield that plated two Bald Eagles and cut the Slippery Rock lead to 3-2.

The Haven took the lead in the fifth inning, as LHU capitalized on a Rock error followed by another RBI single by Zuback.

Up 4-3 in the sixth, Lock Haven scored three insurance runs to push its lead to 7-3.

Cummings, who was relieved by Joe Nestor (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), finished with three strikeouts in six innings of work.  He allowed five hits and just the three early runs.

Nestor struck out two Rock hitters in the final inning.

Zuback went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a stolen base.

Ryan Henritzy (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.

Josh Jones (Neelyton, Pa./Southern-Huntingdon) went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI for LHU.

Today marked the first two games of a heavy weekend schedule for LHU.  The Haven is right back in action tomorrow (March 29) when the Bald Eagles travel to Gannon to kick off a four game series.  LHU will then host Gannon at Foundation Field on Saturday.  First pitch of tomorrow's road doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

- Lock Haven and Slippery Rock split today's games and split the season series, 2-2.
- Scott Zuback drove in three runs in game two today.  Zuback leads LHU with 11 RBIs this season.
- Nick Cummings picked up his first win of the season in game two.
- The Haven takes on Gannon tomorrow in a road doubleheader and hosts the Golden Knights on Saturday.
