Box Score LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For the first time in school history, the Lock Haven University football team played a PSAC East game and the Bald Eagles outlasted Cheyney, 12-10.
Lock Haven (2-1, 1-0 PSAC East) scored two points on a safety with 5:53 left in the third quarter and it proved to be the difference in beating Cheyney (0-3, 0-1 PSAC East) for the second straight time.
Neither team's offense could get anything flowing tonight and the bad weather, combined with a pair of tough defenses pushed the two teams to combine for nine fumbles and six interceptions.
Cheyney took a 7-0 lead after 63-yard TD run by Nahum Purdie with 6:02 left in the opening quarter.
Lock Haven was quick to strike back and with just 25 seconds left in the first quarter,
Dillon Mazzoni (Melbourne, Fla./Shippensburg Univ.) hit
Jeremy Cornelius (Harrisburg, Pa./Temple Univ.) on a 26-yard TD pass.
It marks Mazzoni's third straight game with a touchdown pass and it was the first TD catch of Cornelius's career.
The Wolves led 10-7 at halftime after Jewel Jones's early second-quarter field goal put Cheyney ahead.
Lock Haven placekicker
Alex Boumerhi (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) answered however for LHU. His 46-yard blast evened things at 10-10. It marked the longest field goal for an LHU kicker since a 43-yarder by Dan Hagerman in 2005 vs. Cheyney.
A muffed punt with 5:53 left in the third quarter led LHU to the two points off the safety and it proved to be enough for LHU to hang for their first PSAC Divisional win since the 2007 season finale at Clarion (PSAC West).
Lock Haven only had 121 total yards of offense and 63 came on the ground.
Once again
Brandon Brader (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the way with 56 yards on 17 carries. The 56 yards pushed him to 2,070 for his career, good enough for No. 5 on Lock Haven's all-time career rushing list and just 20 yards away from the fourth spot.
Matt Kirchner (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and
Tony Ballon (Jersey City, N.J./Harrisburg) were spectacular on defense and each made 11 tackles. George Christas (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) added seven solo stops.
The Bald Eagle defense recorded two sacks, seven TFLs, forced one fumble and LHU's three interceptions came from three different players.
Next Saturday (September 28), LHU travels to No. 13 Bloomsburg (3:30 p.m.).
