Lydia George (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) scored 2:41 into overtime and the Lock Haven University field hockey team beat Kent State 1-0 today in a non-conference battle.
LHU (7-2) extended its win streak to five matches and remained undefeated in OT this year with the win. It marked Lock Haven's second straight 1-0 shutout after beating Rider, 1-0 yesterday.
LHU and Kent State (4-7) were just about even through the 70 minutes of regulation. Kent State held a slight 11-10 advantage in shots and each team had seven corners.
The game's biggest moment came less than three minutes into extra time when George put home the winner.
The goal was set up by
Nakira Downes (Bridgetown, Barbados/The Combermere School), who made a long run through the Kent State defense and slotted a through ball to a slashing George.
George took the ball in stride, faked the goalie and calmly placed the ball into the open cage for the win. It was her third goal of the year. All three of her strikes have been game-winners.
LHU goalie
Elaina White (Etters, Pa./Red Land) continues to impress and made three saves in the win. She remains one of the nation's leaders in goals-against-average and save-percentage.
Lock Haven returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 2) night vs. Saint Francis (7 p.m.).
