Box Score WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men's basketball team (8-6, 1-3 PSAC East) returned to PSAC East action today with a tough, 91-87 loss on the road at West Chester (11-4, 4-1 PSAC East).
Wali Hepburn (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the for The Haven to pull off the road win.
The two teams played a very physical first half, combining for 29 fouls in the period.
West Chester, who was tabbed as one of the preseason favorites in the PSAC East this year, led for the majority of the first half, including a 10 point lead, 29-19, WCU's largest of the first half with 8:31 to play.
The Bald Eagles battled back with a 14-3 run to take a, 33-32 lead with 4:51 to play. The two teams went back-and-forth over the final minutes with the Golden Rams holding a one point, 44-43 at the break.
Bootsie Walker (Chester, Pa./Chester) had a huge first half for The Haven. Walker netted a game-high 12 points in the opening period
Hepburn, who was named the PSAC East Player of the Week on Monday, scored the first six points of the game for the Bald Eagles and finished the half with 11 points.
Neither team gained much of an advantage early in the second half. The Bald Eagles opened up a, 55-50 lead with 13:21 to play, but West Chester quickly answered with, 6-0 run to regain the lead.
With the game tied, 67-67 with 7:29 to play,
Julian Bond (Philadelphia/Plymouth Whitemarsh) drilled a three-pointer to put The Haven up, 70-67. After a defensive stop, LHU hit another three, this time from Hepburn, giving the Bald Eagles their biggest lead of the game to that point, 73-67.
After West Chester battled back to even the score, 81-81 with 1:32 to play,
Kasheef Festus (Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll) hit two free throws to put The Haven back on top, 83-81.
West Chester drew a foul and connected on both free throws to tie the game at, 83-83. The Bald Eagles were unable to score on the final possession of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
West Chester scored the first five points of overtime, taking an 88-83 and the Bald Eagles were unable to regain control, as they fell to the Golden Rams, 91-87.
It marked the second straight game with a double-double for Hepburn and fifth straight game he scored at least 20 points.
Walker finished with 16 points and eight rebounds on the day.
Theo West (Philadelphia/Kensington) played an outstanding game for LHU. He scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench.
Troy Hockaday led West Chester with 20 points in the game.
Lock Haven returns to action Wednesday (January 15) when the Bald Eagles host Mansfield University at Thomas Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
