The Lock Haven University wrestling team is set for a pair of weekend Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) matches.
 
The Bald Eagles travel to Clarion on Friday, Jan. 31 for a 7 p.m. match and Lock Haven hosts Cleveland State on Saturday (Feb. 1) at 2 p.m.
 
Saturday's match is Lock Haven's final home match of the season and it marks senior day for three Bald Eagles.
 
Lock Haven enjoyed an off week last week from competition and enters Friday's dual with a 2-8 overall mark. LHU is 0-3 in EWL action with losses to Rider, Bloomsburg and Edinboro.
 
Clarion is 6-10 overall and 0-2 in EWL action.
 
Cleveland State is 1-6 overall and 0-1 in EWL matches. The Vikings wrestle at Bloomsburg Friday evening.
 
Bald Eagle notes & storylines:

• Four Bald Eagles were ranked in this week's national rankings (Wrestling Report).
• For the first time this season, 149-pounder Mac Maldarelli was ranked. He joined Dan Neff, Jake Kemerer and Fred Garcia.
• Last week Cody Wheeler (133) was ranked No. 33 and despite not competing last week dropped out of the rankings this week.
• Wheeler, Neff, Maldarelli, Kemerer and Garcia were all listed in last week's NCAA Coaches' Panel rankings.
• Maldarelli leads all starters with 25 wins.
• Seven of 10 starters enter the weekend with a winning record.

Senior Day:
On Saturday, the Bald Eagles will honor a trio of seniors before the start of the match – Mac Maldarelli, Billy Randt and Jake Kemerer.
 
Breaking out the new mat:
On Saturday afternoon, the Bald Eagles will break out a brand new mat featuring the new LHU Athletics' logo. The mat was made by possible thanks to the donation of local supporters Ron and Jo Ann Bowes. Ron is a 1966 Lock Haven State College graduate and a former Bald Eagle wrestler. The local Fraternal Order of the Eagles, #4298 Club also made a generous donation for a second wrestling mat for the program.
 
Ron and Jo Ann Bowes will be honored at halftime on Saturday as everyone in Haven Nation thanks them for their continued support of LHU Athletics.
 
The magic number is 63:
Both Dan Neff and Fred Garcia each now have 63 career wins. Neff is 63-18, while Garcia is 63-27.
 
Bald Eagles nationally ranked this week:
A total of four Bald Eagles were ranked in this week's Gregg Henry/Wrestling Report rankings including 149-pounder Mac Maldarelli, who enters the rankings for the first time this season. He's ranked No. 33.
 
Dan Neff (141) is ranked No. 24, Jake Kemerer (165) is ranked No. 30 and Fred Garcia (184) is ranked No. 26.
 
First edition of the NCAA rankings:
Five Bald Eagles were ranked in the first of three NCAA Division I Coaches' Panel Rankings, which were released last week (Thursday, Jan. 23).
 
Cody Wheeler, Dan Neff, Mac Maldarelli, Jake Kemerer and Fred Garcia were all ranked by the NCAA.
 
The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. This year's event is March 20-22 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Lock Haven connection:
There are a number of Mat Town U.S.A connections this weekend, including the fact that both Clarion assistant coach Keith Ferraro (2003) and Cleveland State head coach Ben Stehura (2000) are Lock Haven University graduates.
 
VS. Clarion:
The Bald Eagles have lost to Clarion two straight times, including an 18-16 decision last season. Lock Haven won five bouts, but it wasn't enough to take down the Golden Eagles. Current Bald Eagles – Cody Wheeler, Dan Neff, Mac Maldarelli and Fred Garcia all won.
 
Lock Haven is 28-21-2 all-time vs. Clarion.
 
VS. Cleveland State:
Lock Haven has won six straight over the Vikings, including a tough, 19-17 win last year. Down 17-15 heading into the final bout, current student-assistant coach Harry Turner sealed the victory with a major decision.
 
LHU is 25-10 all-time vs. Cleveland State.
