Women’s basketball holds off Mansfield for road win, 66-63

Moyer leads LHU with 16 pts.; Heyward nets season-high 15 in win

Box Score MANSFIELD, Pa.  – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (5-18, 3-10 PSAC East) held off a late push from Mansfield (0-24, 0-14 PSAC East) this afternoon to defeat the Mounties, 66-63 on the road in PSAC East action.

The Lady Eagles played a strong first half on both ends of the court.  LHU held the Mounties to just 25.0% (7-of-28) shooting from the floor in the first and The Haven led, 31-20 at the break.

Shaleta Heyward (Upper Darby, Pa./Mansfield Univ.) had a huge first half off of the bench for LHU.  Heyward sparked the Lady Eagles with 11 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.

Marrysa Moyer (Altoona, Pa./Mansfield Univ.) added nine points in the opening period.

The Lady Eagles found themselves quickly in the penalty in the second half, and Mansfield would take advantage.  The Mounties battled back and took the lead for the first time in the game with 5:38 to play, 56-55.

The game saw three ties and six lead changes in the final 5:00 of action.

Trailing, 63-62 with 17.6 seconds to play, senior forward Kelsey Ryan (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) drew a foul and calmly stepped to the line where she tied the game at, 63-63.

After an MU timeout, Ryan's second free throw fell just short, but Rachael McDaniel (Plainfield, N.J./California Univ. of Penn.) grabbed the offensive rebound and drew a foul.  McDaniel swished both free throws to give LHU the lead, 65-63.

With 10 seconds remaining, Mansfield made one last push down the court, but Lock Haven stood strong defensively, forcing the miss and securing the defensive rebound and the win.

Moyer finished with a team-high 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field.

Heyward finished with a season-high 15 points off the bench for LHU.

McDaniel and Emily Daugherty (Laughlintown, Pa./Ligonier Valley) netted 10 points each for The Haven.

J. J. Hilliard (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) played a solid all-around game.  The sophomore guard finished with six points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Ryan scored five points and added five rebounds.

Jena Matter led Mansfield with a game-high 20 points on the afternoon.

Lock Haven returns to action Wednesday, February 19 when the Lady Eagles travel to Kutztown for a PSAC East matchup.  Tipoff on Saturday is set for 5:30 p.m.

Marrysa Moyer entered tonight's game ranked 11th in the PSAC in scoring at 15.2 points per game and third in rebounding at 9.5 per game…Lock Haven fell in a tough overtime loss to first place West Chester on Wednesday.  Sami Lane led LHU with 18 points off of the bench…Today's game was the first of three straight road games for LHU…The Lady Eagles travel to Kutztown on Wednesday (2/19)
