Box Score THOMASVILLE, N.C. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (4-2) downed Davis & Elkins (5-2) today, 9-7 in eight innings.
Today's game was delayed almost two hours because of an electricity outage throughout the town of Thomasville and at the stadium.
Lock Haven found itself down, 1-0 after one inning of play and that score held through four innings of play.
The LHU bats finally came alive and erupted in the fifth. The Haven scored seven runs on seven hits in the inning.
Ethan Moore (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) got the rally started with a leadoff double to left field. After a bunt single by
Gordon Barr (Johnstown, Pa./Westmoreland County C.C.),
Ryan Henritzy (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) hit a double of his own that drove in LHU's first run of the game.
Two batters later, already leading, 2-1 with runners on first and third,
Anthony Kyne (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn State Brandywine) singled to left that scored Henritzy, putting LHU ahead, 3-1.Â
Back-to-back walks put The Haven up, 4-1 and
Jamie Eshleman (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) plated The Haven's fifth run with an RBI single up the middle.
After a fielder's choice scored put Lock Haven ahead, 6-1, Barr capped off the scoring with an RBI single to right.
Davis & Elkins cut LHU's lead to, 7-4 in its half of the fifth with three unearned runs.
LHU was unable to hold its lead in the seventh inning, as Davis & Elkins plated three more runs to even the score at, 7-7 and send the game to extra innings.
The Bald Eagles were on the attack right away in the eighth. After a one out walk by Henritzy,
Scott Zuback (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) singled left moving Henritzy all the way to third base.
After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Kyne drew another walk that forced in the go-ahead-run.
Senior
Tyler Yesensky (Endwell, N.Y./Old Dominion Univ.) got hit by a pitch that put LHU ahead, 9-7.
Davis & Elkins brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning, but Lock Haven's
Aaron Lidgett (Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch) closed out the win for The Haven.
Joe Nestor (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) started on the mound for LHU and allowed four runs, one of which was earned in 4.2 innings of work. He struck out three and did not allow a free pass.
Lidgett recorded three strikeouts in the final inning to pick up his first save of the year.
Offensively, Barr, Henritzy, Moore and
Ryan Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) all had two hits for LHU.
Kyne led Lock Haven with two RBIs in the game.
The second game of today's doubleheader was canceled because of darkness.
Lock Haven and Davis & Elkins will be right back in action tomorrow (Sunday, March 9). The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
