LHU downs Hofstra, goes 1-2 at Northeast Duals

The LHU wrestling team picked up a win over Hofstra, 24-12, but the Bald Eagles dropped matches to No. 10 Nebraska and Buffalo at the Northeast Duals.

TROY, N.Y. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team went 1-2 today (Sunday, November 15) at the 2015 Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, New York.
 
The Bald Eagles opened the day with a 41-0 loss to No. 10 Nebraska, but Lock Haven responded with a hard-fought 24-12 victory over Hofstra. In LHU's third and final dual of the day, the Bald Eagles were edged 17-16 by Buffalo in a one-point thriller.
 
Leading the way for Lock Haven today was 125-pounder Jake Field (South Elgin, Ill./Marmion Academy) who went 2-0 on the day.

LHU's 197-pounder Phil Sprenkle (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dallastown) went 2-1 in a strong outing. 
 
In the win over Hofstra, Lock Haven won six of 10 bouts.
 
Along with Field and Sprenkle, LHU got wins from Bobby Rehm (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), Cody Wheeler (Towanda, Pa./Towanda), Cody Cordes (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and Tristan Sponseller (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs).
 
Field put LHU on the board early and Rehm won by forfeit, as the Bald Eagles jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Leading 15-9 after seven bouts, Lock Haven put it away with back-to-back bonus point wins, thanks to a Sponseller major decision at 184 and a Sprenkle tech fall at 197.
 
Lock Haven and Buffalo split five matches apiece in a thriller, but a pair of major decisions proved the difference for Buffalo in the narrow-victory.
 
LHU got victories from Field, No. 12 Dan Neff (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco), Aaron McKinney (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), Tyler Wood (West Chester, Pa./West Chester-Rustin) and Sprenkle. Lock Haven led 16-14 after nine bouts, but Buffalo tacked on a victory in the final bout of the dual at 285.
 
Lock Haven is now 1-3 on the season.
 
Lock Haven is set for a pair of dual matches next Saturday, November 21 at home, as the Bald Eagles host Purdue (12:30 p.m.) and Shippensburg (2 p.m.) Purdue and Shippensburg will also wrestle at 10:30 a.m.
 
On Sunday, November 22, LHU will host the annual Mat Town Open Tournament (9:30 a.m.).
