Field Hockey heads south for weekend

The LHU field hockey team is headed to North Carolina for games at Appalachian State and Davidson.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team is headed to North Carolina for a pair of road-games this weekend.

LHU opens the weekend with a non-conference match at Appalachian State on Friday, October 7 at 7 p.m. and the Bald Eagles head to Davidson for Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action on Sunday, October 9 (1 p.m.).

Lock Haven went 1-1 last weekend, splitting A-10 matches. LHU lost to Saint Francis 2-1 despite a late-game rally on Friday (Sept. 30), but the Bald Eagles responded in a big way on Sunday (Oct. 2) in a lopsided 7-0 win over Saint Louis.

The 1-1 run last week moved LHU to 6-4 overall and the Bald Eagles currently sit third in A-10 standings with a 3-2 conference mark.

Sunday's shutout-victory over Saint Louis marked Lock Haven's third shutout of the season. In The Haven's three shutouts, LHU has outscored its opponents 18-0.

All-time series vs. Appalachian State & Davidson:
LHU and Appalachian State have only met twice including last season where Lock Haven won 4-0 at home. Both wins are by shutout (2010; LHU 6-0). Lock Haven is 3-0 all-time vs. Davidson and won last year's meeting 2-1.

Appalachian State is currently 1-9 and Davidson enters the weekend at 2-9, 0-3 A-10.

Three things you need to know:
1. LHU leads the A-10 in scoring margin (1.60) and ranks third in shutouts (3).

2. Lydia George's team-best 14 points are tied for fourth in the A-10.

3. Stephanie Whiteman's three defensive saves are tops in the A-10.

2016 A-10 Players of the Week -
Stuppy named A-10 Player of the Week (9/26/16):
Goalkeeper Paige Stuppy was named the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Player of the Week on Monday, September 26. Stuppy shared the honor with Anna Willocks of Saint Joseph's University.

Stuppy's sensational play in the goal led Lock Haven to a pair of huge conference wins on the road. In the 2-1 victory at VCU she needed to only make two stops, but she did just that.

In a marathon game at Richmond that went to two overtimes and into a sudden-victory shootout, it was all Stuppy for LHU as she was the biggest key to victory. Stuppy made 10 saves and was dominant in the shootout.

Over the two game span, both A-10 wins, Stuppy recorded a 0.82 goals against average and .857 save-percentage.

Whiteman a Preseason All-Conference pick:
Defensive standout Stephanie Whiteman was named a 2016 Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Conference Preseason pick. Last season, she was an All-Region and All-Conference selection.

Up next:
Following Sunday's match at Davidson, the Bald Eagles will return home for a pair of matches on LHU's 2016 Homecoming Weekend. Lock Haven will host Colgate in non-conference action on Friday, October 14 at 3 p.m. and LHU hosts Saint Joseph's Sunday, October 16 in A-10 action.
