Football to close season at home Saturday; game marks Senior Day & Veterans Appreciation

On Saturday (Nov. 11), the LHU football will wrap up the 2017 season with a home game vs. Mercyhurst. Saturday’s game marks the Bald Eagles Senior Day and LHU will host its annual Veterans Appreciation Game.

Setting the stage:

The Lock Haven University football team is set host Mercyhurst University on Saturday, November 11. Kickoff at Hubert Jack Stadium is set for 12 p.m.
 
The game, LHU's 2017 season-finale, will also serve as Senior Day and it marks LHU's 2017 Veterans Appreciation Game. All veterans will be admitted FREE.
 
The Bald Eagles enter the game looking to close the season on a high note. LHU is 2-8 overall and went 2-5 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action. Lock Haven's two wins have come in the last five weeks. Last week, LHU fell to East Stroudsburg 37-27 despite another strong offensive outing and a sensational fourth-quarter rally.
 
Mercyhurst enters the game at 4-6 overall. Losers of two straight, the Lakers are coming off a 36-10 loss to perennial power IUP.
 
Haven hits:
  • Last week (Week 10, Nov. 4), LHU rallied for 13 fourth-quarter points, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback vs. ESU.
  • LHU finished PSAC East action at 2-5 with wins over Cheyney and Bloomsburg.
  • True-freshman QB Kyle Knight had another big outing last week vs. East Stroudsburg. He rushed for a TD and threw his first career passing-TD. Knight was 18 of 34 (no INTs) for a career-high 264 yards.
  • RB Ralph Hyland rushed for a career-high 165 yards last week.
  • As a team, LHU rushed for over 300 yards for the second straight game and third time this season.
  • The Bald Eagles have 20 rushing TDs on the season and 18 of them have come in the last five games.
  • RB John Ford rushed for a TD last week vs. ESU, marking his fifth straight game with a rushing touchdown. For Ford, 7 of his 8 rushing TDs this season have come in the last five games.
  • The run-game has been sparked by Knight – LHU"s true-freshman QB – who has three 100-plus yard rushing games. He has eight rushing TDs on the year.
  • Knight hasn't thrown an INT in four straight games.
  • As a team, the LHU defense has recorded 13 interceptions. That's tied for the fourth-most in the PSAC this season.
  • DB Carlos Balkcom has five of LHU's 13 INTs, which ranks him tied for No. 3 in the PSAC.
  • DB Isaiah Flamer leads LHU with 86 tackles. His 8.6 tackles per game are No. 8 in the PSAC and his 58 solo stops are No. 2 in the league.
  • LHU head coach Dave Taynor (Urbana, '99) is in his third season as head coach at LHU (3rd season (8-24 at LHU), 10th overall (45-64).
 
The series with Mercyhurst:
Saturday is just the seventh meeting between the two schools in a series that dates back to just 2008. Last season, at Mercyhurst, the Lakers won 49-14. Mercyhurst has won all six meetings in the series to date.
 
Senior Day:
On Saturday, the Bald Eagles will honor their 16 graduating seniors prior to the opening kick: Carlos Balkcom, Corey Blakey, Chris Bonk, Nick Bourmerhi, Kevin Campbell, Brandon Clements, Marcus Disbrow, Trent Fielding, Austin Heinbaugh, David Lazo, Connor Marsico, Terrell Mitchell, Andres Medina-Munoz, Devante Oliver, Cole Renninger and Daniel Strawbridge.
 
Veterans Appreciation:
LHU will honor veterans Saturday with the Bald Eagles annual Veterans Appreciation Game. All veterans will be admitted to the game free of charge and the game is part of LHU's month-long salute to veterans on campus and in the local community. Along with LHU Athletics, the Veterans Appreciation Football Game is being made possible thanks to the hard work of a number of area organizations including the local Pennsylvania National Guard office, LHU-Williamsport Team RWB, the Clinton Country Veterans Affairs Office, LHU ROTC and LHU Student Veterans Alliance.
