Softball wraps up opening weekend

The LHU softball team wrapped up its 2017 opening weekend today (Sunday, Feb. 19) with a pair of losses, falling to Southern New Hampshire and Le Moyne.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Lock Haven University softball team (1-5) capped its opening weekend of the 2017 season with a pair of losses today at the Snowbird Freezeout Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Lock Haven opened the day with a narrow 4-3 loss to Southern New Hampshire in extra innings (8 inn.) and LHU capped the weekend with an 8-3 loss to Le Moyne.

LHU opened the season on Friday (Feb. 17) and lost to both New Haven and Concord. Yesterday, Lock Haven fell to Wilmington (Del.), but the Bald Eagles picked up their first win of the campaign with a 5-2 victory over Glenville State in Saturday's game two.

Leading the way all weekend for Lock Haven was McKenna Garlock (Three Springs, Pa./Southern Huntingdon), who is hitting .438 through the first six games.

Game 1: Southern New Hampshire 4 – Lock Haven 3 (8 inn.)

Lock Haven and SNHU (5-1) were tied 3-3 after seven innings, but the Penmen took advantage of the international-tiebreaker in the bottom of the eighth, plating the winning-run.

Jodi Weaknecht (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) quickly put the Bald Eagles up 2-0 with a two-run home run in the top of the first. For Weaknecht it marked home runs in back-to-back games.

Pitcher Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) struck out six.

In all, Lock Haven's five hits came from five different players.

Game 2: Le Moyne 8 – Lock Haven 3

LHU capped the weekend with a loss to Le Moyne (5-1).

Lock Haven scored all three runs in the third as Garlock knocked one home and Rachel Mouillesseaux (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) knocked in a pair on a single. Mouillesseaux also struck out three in the circle.

A look ahead:
The Bald Eagles will return to the diamond on Friday, March 3 at the Shaw Tournament. Lock Haven will open the tournament vs. No. 9 Charleston in a rematch of an epic extra-inning marathon game at last year's NCAA Tournament. LHU will also take on host-Shaw, Virginia State, Lenoir-Rhyne and Virginia Union during the three-day tournament.
