SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team split matches today (Friday, September 8) on Day 1 of the Shepherd Showdown. The Bald Eagles opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Virginia State, before falling to host Shepherd, 3-1 in a tightly contested contest.
The 1-1 record today moves the Bald Eagles to 2-4 overall on the season. LHU will wrap up the weekend at Shepherd tomorrow (Saturday, September 9).
In today's opener, Lock Haven downed Virginia State 3-0 (25-12, 25-23 & 25-12).
In LHU's second match of the day, The Haven locked up with tournament-host Shepherd and the two teams battled it out in a four-set thriller. In the end, Shepherd's strong start helped the Rams win 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 22-25 & 25-17).
Down 2-0, the Bald Eagles rallied in the third. As a team, Lock Haven knocked down 14 kills and hit .394 in the third set.
For the match,
Breanna McDonald (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) led LHU with 15 kills. She hit a sensational .609.
Veronica Morrison (Sugar Run, Pa./Wyalusing) added seven kills,
Kristen Nealon (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) dished out 31 assists and
Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) recorded 20 digs.
Tomorrow, LHU will take on Alderson-Broaddus (10 a.m.) and Ursuline (5:30 p.m.).
