Women’s Basketball battles at DI Penn State; Devine scores game-high 18 points

The LHU women’s basketball team opened the season with an exhibition game today at nearby DI Penn State giving the Bald Eagles a wonderful opportunity to gauge where they are in the preparation for the 2018-19 campaign.

UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Presented with an all-around wonderful opportunity, the Lock Haven University women's basketball team made the short trek over to NCAA Division I Penn State for an exhibition game.
 
Despite the final score – a 92-57 Penn State win – the experience and game gave the LHU coaching staff and team a wonderful opportunity to gauge where they are leading into the official start of the 2018-19 season.
 
Leading the way today for Lock Haven was Rileigh Devine who scored a game-high 18 points. She knocked down five 3-pointers (5 of 9). Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh added nine points and freshman Taylor Leidy grabbed seven rebounds go along with seven points.
 
LHU head coach Jennifer Smith always enjoys the opportunity to have her team step up against the next level and play an elite opponent as it provides valuable experience.
 
Recent games vs. DI opponents:
Today's game marked the first meeting between the LHU women and the Lady Lions since the 2013-14 season. The two teams met in an exhibition at the Bryce Jordan Center on October 27, 2013. Former Haven standout Marrysa Moyer netted 17 points in the loss. Sunday's trip to Penn State marked Lock Haven's third straight DI-exhibition game to open a season. In the last two seasons, LHU played at Toledo.
 
A look back at last season with the future in mind:
Last season, Lock Haven finished 5-21 overall and a 4-18 record in the PSAC. Last season was marked by a big home win versus Millersville, the eventual PSAC runner-up. The Bald Eagles return their high scorer from last year in junior guard Rileigh Devine. Devine led the team in points per game with 10.9 and averaged two made 3-pointers per game while shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc. The Haven also returns sophomore Bink Redman, who went on a hot streak with four consecutive double-doubles. She finished the season averaging seven points per game and a team high 5.4 rebounds per game. She led the team in rebounds per game, assists per game (2.4), blocks (0.7) and steals per game (1.2).
 
Up next:
The Bald Eagles will officially open the season on Friday, Nov. 9 at the 2018 MEC/PSAC Challenge hosted by Fairmont State. LHU will play Concord on Friday (Nov. 9), before taking on host Fairmont State on Saturday, Nov. 10.
