Softball wraps up busy opening weekend

Softball wrapped up the opening weekend of the season with games against Wilmington (Del.) and Southern New Hampshire.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Lock Haven University softball team (1-5) wrapped up the opening weekend of the season today with two games. The first game of the day was against Wilmington (Del.) with the second game being against Southern New Hampshire. The Bald Eagles fell 7-3 to Wilmington (Del.), then fell to Southern New Hampshire, 6-3.

In the first game of the day, Lock Haven was able to strike early in the bottom of the first when Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) sent a two-run home run over the left-field fence to put LHU in front 2-0 early.

The Wildcats responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2. Wilmington then added three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Caputo added another home run in the sixth, but it wasn't quite enough as Wilmington added two more runs in the seventh to seal the victory.

Caputo led The Haven offense, going 2-3 with two home runs and three RBIs. Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J. Hammonton) went 1-2 in the game with a single.

In the second game, The Bald Eagles were able to strike first again thanks to an RBI groundout from Mathes to put LHU on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

Southern New Hampshire responded with two runs in the top of the second inning to jump ahead 2-1, then added four more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

Lock Haven added two runs in the bottom of the seventh innings, but it wasn't quite enough as Southern New Hampshire was able to fend off the LHU comeback to get the win.

Caputo once again led the Bald Eagle offense, going 2-3 in this one. Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) also played a strong game, going 1-3 with two RBIs.

CAPUTO & LINDSEY LEAD OFFENSIVE CHARGE:

Caputo and Moriah Lindsey (Woolrich, Pa./Central Mountain) led the Bald Eagles at the plate during 2018's opening weekend. Caputo hit .381 with eight hits and four home runs. She recorded nine RBIs. Lindsey hit .389 with seven hits, a home run and three RBIs.
