CLERMONT, Fla. - The Lock Haven University softball team (7-7) was back in action at the PFX Tournament after a day off as they faced Bridgeport (7-7) before competing against Bemidji State (8-10) in the afternoon session. The Bald Eagles took game one vs Bridgeport 2-1 before falling in game two against Bemidji State 1-0 in eight innings.
Bekah Slattery (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was firing on all cylinders against Bemidji State as she tied the LHU single game record for strikeouts fanning 15 batters.
The Bald Eagles jumped out to the early 1-0 lead against Bridgeport in the first inning after
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J. Hammonton) reached base on an error by the second baseman that resulted in
Moriah Lindsey (Woolrich, Pa./Central Mountain) scoring.
The two teams then traded a run in the six inning as LHU scored one in the top half of the inning when Lindsey laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance
Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa/Troy) to second base, but an error by the second baseman allowed Ceely to race around and score. Bridgeport then responded and scored one in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1 which held for the remainder of the game.
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa/Loyalsock) got the starting nod on the mound as she pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing no earned runs and scattering five hits for the win. Slattery came on in relief and pitched the final 1 1/3 innings as she did not allow a hit and struck out all four batters she faced as she earned the save.
In the contest against Bemidji State the two teams were evenly matched as the game was scoreless heading into extra innings where Bemidji State pushed a run across to take the 1-0 victory.
Slattery pitched all eight innings as she only allowed five hits and no earned runs while striking out 15 batters.
Lock Haven will wrap up its spring break action tomorrow at the PFX Tournament as the Bald Eagles will face Purdue University-Northwest at 9 a.m. before capping the trip vs Wayne State at 11:30 a.m.
