Strong pitching, timely hitting help softball sweep UPJ & extend win streak

The LHU softball team extended its win streak to 14 games with a PSAC Central sweep of Pitt-Johnstown.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (21-9, 10-0 PSAC) used some outstanding pitching from Bekah Slattery (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) to go along with some timely hitting to sweep Pitt-Johnstown (8-14, 4-6 PSAC Central) and move to a perfect 10-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division action on the season.

The wins also pushed LHU's win streak to 14 games, the longest win streak the team has had since 2009 when the Bald Eagles were able to post win streaks of 19 games and 22 games on their way to winning the national championship.

GAME 1: W, 1-0

In game one, the Bald Eagles and the Mountain Cats combined to have only five hits in the game as Slattery and UPJ's Kristen Coffay engaged in a pitching duel.

Moriah Lindsey (Woolrich, Pa./Central Mountain) was able to drive in the loan run of the game on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth to give LHU the 1-0 lead and eventual victory.

Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) led the Lock Haven offense, going 2-3 at the plate while Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) added a hit as well.

Slattery was sensational on the mound for LHU, throwing a complete game, two-hitter as she shut down the Mountain Cats. She struck eight batters on the day and tallied no walks.

GAME 2: W, 2-0

In game two, Gee and Coffay engaged in another pitcher's duel, allowing only four hits combined as they kept the opposing team off balance.

In the bottom of the third, Ceely sent a double into the right-center gap to plate Kromko and give LHU a 1-0 lead. Bree Hilty (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) extended the Lock Haven lead to 2-0 in the fourth when she sent a deep home run over the left field fence.

Hilty, Ceely and Kromko led the LHU offense as they were able to tally the three Haven hits in the game.

Gee was dominant in the circle for the Bald Eagles, allowing only a bunt single over her seven innings of work. She had a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings and did not walk a batter in the game while striking out seven.
