Strong defense leads Bald Eagles to 2-0 day

The LHU volleyball team used a pair of very strong defensive efforts to knock off both Glenville State and Davis & Elkins Saturday at the Rebich Invitational.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (3-2) used a dominating defensive performance to start the day strong as they knocked off Glenville State (1-2), 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-23) before outlasting Davis & Elkins (2-3), 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11) to finish the day 2-0 and move to 3-2 on the young season.
 
The Bald Eagle defense was the story of the day as the front line tallied 39 total blocks on the day and owned the front of the net all day.
 
Lock Haven 3 – Glenville State 0
 
The Bald Eagles got off to a fast start and never looked back as LHU put on a clinic and knocked off Glenville State, 3-0 in straight sets in the first game of the day for The Haven.
 
The defense was the story of the game for The Bald Eagles as they totaled a remarkable 23 blocks in the match. Chloe Williams (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) led the defensive charge with a block solo and five block assists. Breanna McDonald (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) tallied two solo blocks and three block assists as six players on the team tallied two or more blocks for LHU.
 
Lock Haven was powered by a balanced attack as Veronica Morrison (Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) and McDonald led the way with nine kills each.
 
Standout Libero Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) tallied 17 digs in the match while Kristen Nealon (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) dished out 28 assists and tallied 11 digs.
 
Lock Haven 3 – Davis & Elkins 2
 
The Bald Eagles and D&E battled throughout the match, exchanging points and sets throughout the first four sets.
 
LHU was able to come up with some huge plays down the stretch to outlast Davis & Elkins and escape the day with a 2-0 record.
 
The defense once again came up huge for The Haven. Whiteman led the charge with 34 digs and consistently kept plays alive for the offense to capitalize.
 
Nealon and Gabrielle Stick (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) were both outstanding all around in the game. Nealon tallied 47 assists to go along with 18 digs and three block assists while Stick talied 11 kills, 14 digs and three total blocks.
 
Morrison and McDonald once again led the Lock Haven offense. Morrison led the team with 14 kills to go with her nine digs and three service aces. McDonald totaled 12 kills to go with six total blocks and five digs.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bald Eagles will now turn their attention to next weekend's Marauder Clash, hosted by Millersville University. Lock Haven will open the clash on Friday, September 7 when they take on Dominican at 3:00 before facing Shepherd at 7:00.
