CLARION, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team got four wins on the night including crucial late-match tech falls from Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and No. 13 Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley), but it wasn't enough as the Bald Eagles (5-2, 1-1 MAC East) fell to host Clarion University (2-3, 1-1 MAC East), 20-16, in a thrilling Mid-American Conference (MAC) Eastern Division dual.
 
Siegrist and Hazel's tech falls came at 174 and 184 pounds, and LHU also got wins from DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) and No. 18 Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) at 133 and 141, respectively.
 
With his win, Fehlman extended his win streak to 12 straight bouts. The newest member of Lock Haven's 100-win club hasn't lost since November 23 at Navy Classic.
 
Tonight's match started at 125 pounds and Clarion took an early 3-0 lead after Jake Gromacki edged out Matt Maloney (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Liberty) 4-3.
 
Fehlman extended his win streak and improved 13-5 on the season with a solid effort at 133. Fehlman scored three total takedowns and tied the dual at 3-3. He led Seth Koleno 4-3 after two and stretched the difference to 8-4 with a third-period takedown and nearly two and half minutes of riding time.
 
Lock Haven took its first lead of the dual behind Shoop's 6-0 win at 141 pounds. Shoop, ranked No. 18 nationally, led 2-0 after one period thanks to a first-period takedown and he scored two second-period near fall points on the way to the 6-0 win. Shoop dominated Taylor Ortz from the start and racked up over two minutes of riding time in the win.
 
After back-to-back LHU wins at 133 and 141, Clarion won three straight bouts.
 
At 149, 10^th ranked Brock Zacherl put Clarion up 7-6 with a major decision over Brock Port (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte). At 157, Clarion's Avery Shay knocked off No. 18 Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro), 7-1. Clarion extended the run at 165, as Mike Bartolo downed Austin Bell (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon), 8-3.
 
Clarion wins at 149, 157 and 165 put the hosts up 13-6.
 
Lock Haven however responded in a big way with back-to-back tech falls from Siegrist and Hazel at 174 and 184, respectively.
 
Siegrist put the Bald Eagles back in it with a clinical effort at 174. Takedown after takedown carried Siegrist to a 20-5 (6:23) tech fall over Max Wohlabaugh.
 
Hazel, ranked No. 13 at 184, continued the LHU run with a one-man show. He downed Luke Funck by tech fall, 21-6 in just 4:39.
 
The back-to-back Lock Haven techs put LHU up 16-13.
 
At 197, No. 13 Greg Bulsak recorded bonus points for Clarion after a 9-0 major over Parker McClellan (Altoona, Pa./Altoona).
 
Bulsak's major at 197 put Clarion up 17-16 after nine bouts.
 
With the match on the line and Clarion clinging to a narrow one-point lead, 17-16, the Golden Eagles secured the thrilling with at home with a victory in the final bout at 285. Ty Bagoly used a late takedown and clipped Trey Hartsock (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) 3-0.
 
Tonight's road match at Clarion closed out the 2019 portion of the Bald Eagles schedule. Lock Haven will open 2020 on New Year's Day at the Southern Scuffle. The two-day Southern Scuffle is set for January 1-2 (Wed. – Thurs.). Action each day will start at 10 a.m. in Chattanooga's McKenzie Arena. Last season, the Bald Eagles finished sixth at the Southern Scuffle behind four placewinners. The sixth-place finish was the best in school history.
