SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Big days at the plate from
Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) and
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) as well as another stellar outing in the circle from
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) helped power the Lock Haven University softball team (11-9) to a sweep of Slippery Rock (8-13) Tuesday afternoon in Slippery Rock. LHU took game one, 2-0 before taking game two, 7-5.
Game 1: W, 2-0
The Bald Eagles knocked off The Rock, 2-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.
Carpenter started the scoring early for Lock Haven, sending a double to deep left field that scored Caputo and gave LHU the 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Slattery helped her own cause in the fourth inning when she drilled a double to left field to score
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and give The Bald Eagles a 2-0 lead.
That was all of the scoring LHU needed to do.
Slattery was outstanding on the mound today, pitching a two-hit shutout while striking out 14 batters in the game. She walked no batters and allowed only one Slippery Rock player to tally a hit as she completely dominated the game from the start.
Caputo and Carpenter led the offense for LHU. Caputo finished the game 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and a run scored while Carpenter went 2-3 in the game with a double and an RBI.
Slattery finished with a double and an RBI while Mathes finished with a double and a run scored.
Game 2: W, 7-5
LHU took game two by a final score of 7-5 to sweep the doubleheader over SRU.
Casey Carpenter was the story of the game for LHU in this one as her offense powered Lock Haven to the win.
Leading 1-0 in the first inning, Carpenter drilled a two-run double to left field that put the Bald Eagles ahead 3-0.
In the fifth, Carpenter extended the LHU lead to 5-1 when she belted a two-run home run over the left center fence.
Lock Haven was then able to take advantage of a Slippery Rock error to extend the lead to 7-1.
Slippery Rock was able to cut the lead to 7-5, but Slattery relieved
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) and shut the door on SRU to get the 7-5 win.
Carpenter finished the game 2-4 with a double, home run and four RBI's as she powered LHU to victory. Caputo and Mathes both finished 2-4 as well with Caputo adding two runs scored and an RBI while Mathes also scored a run.
Chloe Kennedy (Elkton, Md./Caravel Academy) added a double while
Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) added a single and a RBI.
Gee pitched well for LHU, giving up six hits over 5.2 innings of work while striking out eight.

The Bald Eagles will return to Lawrence Field for the team's next game when they host Pitt-Johnstown in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division opener. The doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, March 29 with the first pitch set for 2:30.
