LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men's basketball team is set for a return trip to the postseason as the Bald Eagles open 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament play tonight at Shippensburg University. Tonight's PSAC First Round contest is set for a 7 p.m. tip.
The Bald Eagles are the No. 6 seed from the PSAC East, while host-Shippensburg is the No. 3 seed. The winner of tonight's game will play No. 2 West Chester in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Tonight's game marks Lock Haven's first PSAC playoff appearance since the 2016-17 season. Under head coach
Mike Nestor's leadership, the Bald Eagles made four straight playoff appearances from 2014-2017.
LHU is 12-14 overall and went 8-12 in PSAC play during the regular season. Shippensburg is 22-6 and went 16-4 in PSAC play.
Back on January 16, Lock Haven secured a signature season win, as LHU upset Shippensburg, 59-58 in a thriller. With five seconds left in the game and the Bald Eagles trailing by one,
Matt Cerruti got an acrobatic layup to fall and it proved to be the difference in the win. At the time, it was only the second PSAC loss of the season for Shippensburg, who lost four games in conference play all season.
The January-win helped LHU split the season series with the Raiders. On February 16, at Ship, Shippensburg won 100-70.
Cerruti leads LHU with 19.9 points per game and
Christian Kelly is adding 19.2 points per game. Without question, the duo is a reason behind Lock Haven's playoff push, and both have elevated their games to another level during the second half of the season. Both Cerruti and Kelly rank among the top-10 in the league in scoring.
Jihad Barnes is averaging 10.5 points per game and
Jesse McPherson is adding 10.1 points per game, as balanced scoring in the name of the game for The Haven. Kelly, who is coming off a trio of monster games to end the regular season, has a team-best 7.6 rebounds per game. Barnes is averaging 4.3 assists per game, the 10
th best mark in the PSAC.
