LHU sweeps Clarion in PSAC Central showdown

The Lock Haven softball team was able to sweep the day from Clarion Saturday afternoon as the Bald Eagles moved to 4-2 on the year in PSAC Central play.

CLARION, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (16-12, 4-2 PSACC) was able to defeat Clarion University (0-29, 0-6 PSACC) in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Clarion. LHU took game one, 7-0 before winning game two, 10-2 in five innings.
 
The pair of wins moved The Bald Eagles to 4-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division play this season.
 
Game One: W, 7-0
 
The Bald Eagles knocked off the Golden Eagles, 7-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
LHU got the scoring started early as the team put six runs on the board in the first two innings as The Haven jumped out to an early 6-0 lead.
 
Rachel Gricoski (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) highlighted a two-run first inning when she singled to right field to score two runs and give LHU the 2-0 lead.
 
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) added a two-run single of her own to highlight a four-run second inning in which the Bald Eagles were able to extend their lead to 6-0.
 
Lock Haven tacked on another run in the top of the seventh when Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) knocked an RBI single up the middle to score a run as LHU defeated Clarion, 7-0.
 
Ceely, Caputo and Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) led The Bald Eagles at the plate as they all tallied two hits. Ceely finished 2-4 with an RBI while Caputo finished 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Criss went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.
 
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) threw a complete-game shutout in the circle for LHU. She allowed six hits and struck out 12 in the game.
 
Game Two: W, 10-2 (5 inn.)
 
Lock Haven used a five-run fifth inning to fuel the team to a 10-2 win in five innings over Clarion to complete the sweep.
 
Ceely, Caputo, Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) and Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) led the LHU offense as they tallied all eight hits for LHU in the ballgame.
 
Caputo had a huge game at the plate, going 2-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored and five RBI's. Her three-run double in the fourth broke up a 2-2 tie and gave LHU a 5-2 advantage. Her two-run home run in the fifth then put LHU up 10-2 and put the eight run rule in play for the Bald Eagles.
 
Carpenter went 2-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI while Ceely went 2-3 as well with three runs scored.
 
Gee finished the contest 2-2 with two runs scored and an RBI in an all-around great game for the junior pitcher.
 
She got the nod in the circle for Lock Haven, throwing all five innings while allowing just two hits. She allowed just one earned run and struck out four.

LHU gets right back to work tomorrow (April 7) when the team hosts PSAC Central foe IUP in a doubleheader at Lawrence Field. The games are scheduled for 12:00/2:00 PM start times.
