LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Christian Kelly (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville),
Matt Cerruti (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Jesse McPherson (Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll) all netted 20-plus points and the Bald Eagle trio powered the Lock Haven University men's basketball team (7-7, 4-6 PSAC East) to a thrilling upset-win over visiting and 12
th ranked West Chester University (14-2, 8-2 PSAC East), 89-84 in front of a jubilant Thomas Fieldhouse crowd.
West Chester led by one at the break, and the second half proved to a back-and-forth thriller as LHU looked to have the upset in mind over the Golden Rams, who entered the night as one of the top teams in all of NCAA Division II basketball.
Late in the game, LHU closed the game going 9-9 down the stretch from the floor. LHU did not miss a shot for the final 7:31 of the game. On defensive end, the Bald Eagles were even better holding the Golden Rams to 4-14 from the field to close out the game.
With the Golden Rams holding a six-point lead at the four-minute mark, Kelly led a determined Haven run down the stretch. Kelly scored eight straight points in a 1:30 stretch for the Bald Eagles to put them up for good.
In the end, clutch shooting from the Bald Eagles carried the home team to the important Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East win.
The three headed monster of Kelly, Cerruti and McPherson accounted for 76% of Lock Haven's points. Kelly led the way with 27 points and eight rebounds. Cerruti did most of his damage in the second half scoring 17 of his 21 in the half. McPherson was strong late for Lock Haven finishing with 20 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Eli Washington (Lancaster, Pa./ Hempfield) did a little bit of everything on the day. He finished with seven points, three rebounds and six assists.
The thrilling win marked the Haven's first win over a ranked opponent since February, 2014 when LHU knocked off No. 3 and previously unbeaten East Stroudsburg. ESU was one of four unbeaten teams in all of college basketball and the only unbeaten team in Division II.
