Wrestling set for 3-match road swing

The Bald Eagles are headed on the road for a busy stretch which includes three away duals in three days.

1/15/2020 4:38:00 PM

The Lock Haven University wrestling team is set to embark on a three-match road trip. The three road duals, which include two Mid-American Conference (MAC) Eastern Division duals, will come on three consecutive days.

The Bald Eagles will open the three-match southern road swing at Appalachian State on Thursday (Jan. 16) at 6:30 p.m., before road duals at Old Dominion and George Mason.

LHU will take on ODU in MAC East action on Friday (Jan. 16) at 6:30 p.m. and the Bald Eagles will cap the weekend with a MAC East match at George Mason on Saturday (Jan. 18). Saturday's dual at GMU is set for a 12 p.m. start.

The Bald Eagles will enter the busy stretch with a 5-2 overall dual record. LHU is 1-1 in MAC East action and Lock Haven is 1-1 in "true" road duals. Despite a strong 10th place showing at the Southern Scuffle (Jan. 1-2), the Bald Eagles will look to bounce back in dual-meet action after a 20-16 loss at Clarion on December 21. That loss to Clarion marked LHU's last dual, and it snapped Lock Haven's five-match win streak.

LHU was impressive in its last outing as three placewinners guided Lock Haven to a 10th place showing at the prestigious Southern Scuffle on January 1-2. Luke Werner led the way with a second-place finish at 125 pounds, while Kyle Shoop (141) was fourth and Cole Manley (133) was fifth.

Appalachian State enters the match Thursday with a 4-2 record. Old Dominion is 3-7 overall (0-0 MAC East) and George Mason is 7-3 (2-0 MAC East).

Last season, Lock Haven rolled by App State, 31-7 at home. This marks the first meeting between Lock Haven and Old Dominion since a January 2014 ODU win at the Virginia Duals. All-time, the Bald Eagles are 12-0 vs. George Mason. None of the four teams cracked this week's (Jan. 14) National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top-25, but Lock Haven did receive votes (six points).

This week, a total of six Bald Eagles appear in the TrackWrestling.com individual national rankings, including Werner who is ranked No. 15 at 125. DJ Fehlman (No. 29, 133), Shoop (No. 19, 141), Alex Klucker (No. 30, 157), Jared Siegrist (No. 31, 174) and Corey Hazel (No. 33, 184) are all ranked this week.

All three opponents feature lineups bolstering national ranked wrestlers. Appalachian State has four ranked this week including No. 18 Cary Miller at 285. Codi Russell (No. 33, 133), Jonathan Miller (No. 26, 149) and Matt Zovistoski (No. 29, 157) are ranked as well. For ODU, Killian Cardinale is ranked No. 18 at 125, while Sa'Derian Perry (No. 23, 141) and Larry Early (No. 16, 157) are also ranked. George Mason's lineup features No. 28 Alex Madrigal (141) and No. 25 Colston DiBlasi (149). Without question, the rankings set up some exciting bouts between ranked opponents.

  • Fehlman picked up his 100th victory in the Bald Eagles dual-win over Bloomsburg on December 19. Fehlman's 100th win came in style as he majored Josh Mason 13-3 at 133. He became the 22nd member of LHU's 100-win club and the first since Shoop hit 100 wins last season.
  • Jared Siegrist has 86 career wins as he inches closer to career win No.100.
  • Kyle Shoop, a returning All-American and LHU's all-time leader in career tech falls, now has 120 career wins after going 5-2 at the Southern Scuffle. Those 120 wins have him tied for No. 4 all-time. The No. 3 mark is 123 wins.
  • In 2019-20, the Bald Eagles return four of six NCAA qualifiers from last season. LHU's returning national qualifiers are DJ Fehlman (133), Kyle Shoop (141), Alex Klucker (157) and Corey Hazel (184). Shoop, a returning All-American (7th, 141), is a three-time national qualifier.
