LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team (6-5) got off to another fast start, but it wasn't enough to hold off No. 19 Army West Point, as the visitors secured the non-conference dual win, 26-9, tonight in front of a packed Thomas Fieldhouse crowd.
The Bald Eagles got wins from No. 15
Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), No. 32
DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) and No. 21
Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) as they opened with three straight victories at 125, 133 and 141. The quick start put Lock Haven up 9-0 in the dual.
For Shoop, the victory marked career win No. 123, which ties him for the third-most in school history.
The Bald Eagles are now 6-5 overall in dual action this season. With the win, Army extended its win streak to four matches and improved to 8-2.
Werner – ranked No. 15 at 125 - took down Trey Chalifoux, 7-0 in a dominating match-opening effort. Werner scored a quick takedown and racked up 2:45 of riding time in the first period. He led 5-0 after two and extended it to a 7-0 win, thanks in part to over three minutes of riding time.
Fehlman – ranked No. 32 at 133 – downed Lane Peters 7-1 and extended the Lock Haven lead to 6-0. Fehlman led 2-0 after one, thanks to a first-period takedown. He led 4-0 after two and secured over two minutes of riding time.
Shoop – ranked No. 21 at 141 – won a thriller, much to the delight of the home crowd. He knocked off Corey Shire 9-7, thanks to a sudden-victory takedown. Shoop trailed 7-4 after one and 7-6 after two, but he rode out the third period and tied the bout at 7-7 at the end of regulation. Energized by the home fans, Shoop scored a quick takedown in sudden victory and put things away.
From there it was all Army as the Black Knights won the final seven bouts of the dual and secured the dual, 26-9.
At 149, No. 29 P.J. Ogunsanya edged
Brock Port (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte), 6-3. In a battle of two nationally-ranked foes at 157, No. 12 Markus Hartman of Army downed No. 33
Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro) by major decision.
Caleb Clymer (Germansville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) showed well at 165, but in the end he was edged out by No. 19 Cael McCormick, 5-2. The 174-bout also featured a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers and Army's Ben Harvey – ranked 14
th – took down No. 32
Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), 4-0 in a hard-fought thriller.
The Bald Eagles will return to action on Thursday, February 6 when they host Edinboro University in a Mid-American Conference (MAC) Eastern Division dual at 7 p.m. On Friday, February 7, Lock Haven will host Rider in MAC East action at 7 p.m.
