Long ball lifts LHU in Game 1, Bald Eagles split

The LHU softball team picked up the first win of the season, thanks to a dominating 6-3 victory over Southern Conn. St. The Bald Eagles split on Day 2 today.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Behind strong pitching and the use of the long ball, the Lock Haven University softball team picked up its first win of the 2020 season today, thanks to a commanding 6-3 win over Southern Connecticut State. LHU dropped its second game of today's action, falling to Seton Hill, 7-5. 
 
Lock Haven also homered twice in game two today vs. Seton Hill, marking back-to-back two home run outings for the Bald Eagle bats.
 
Today marked the second day of three at the season-opening tournament. Lock Haven (1-3) played twice yesterday and the Bald Eagles will round out the weekend tomorrow with two more games.  
 
Game 1 vs. Southern Connecticut State: W, 6-3
The Bald Eagles used home runs from senior-standout Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) and freshman Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy), and LHU powered its way by Southern Connecticut State, 6-3.
 
Freshman-pitcher Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) was credited with the victory, marking the first win of her Bald Eagle career. She scattered nine hits and walked two.
 
Carpenter had a two-run homer in the first and McClellan hit a solo homer in the fifth.
 
Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) had two hits in the win.
 
Game 2 vs. Seton Hill: L, 7-5
LHU dropped its second game of the day today, falling to Seton Hill, 7-5 in a high-scoring early-season outing.
 
Lock Haven's five runs came on six hits and Seton Hill recorded its difference-making seven runs on 11 hits as the two Pennylsvania schools combined for 12 runs on 17 hits.
 
For LHU, the long ball was once again part of the offensive story, as Carpenter homered again, a two-run shot in the sixth.
 
Sydney Arrigale (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) drilled a three-run home run in the third inning to get the LHU scoring started. She finished with a pair of hits in the game.
 
Day 1 (Feb. 14) Recap:
The Bald Eagles officially opened the 2020 season with a pair of games yesterday (Friday, Feb. 14) and LHU lost both. Lock Haven fell to West Virginia State, 6-1 and No.17 Saint Anselm rallied by The Haven, 5-1 in the second game yesterday.
 
Up next:
LHU will wrap up its 2020 season-opening weekend tomorrow (Sun, Feb. 16) with a pair of games. Lock Haven will meet Kutztown at 10 a.m. before taking on Goldey-Beacom at noon.
