The LHU wrestling team got wins from a trio of seniors, but in the end, No. 16 Cornell earned a 23-13 non-conference win.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team (7-7) closed the dual portion of its 2019-20 season tonight at home with a 23-13 loss to No. 16 Cornell (11-7). The Bald Eagles won four bouts and got wins from three seniors in the lineup as LHU celebrated Senior Night in front of another boisterous Thomas Fieldhouse crowd.

Prior to the start of tonight's match, LHU honored its eight graduating seniors: DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren), Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), Collin Glorioso (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon), Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro), Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) and Ray Bernot (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) and Trey Hartsock (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County).

These eight LHU student-athletes have firmly planted Lock Haven wrestling and Mat-Town USA back on the national wrestling scene. This group has over 500 individual wins, helped Lock Haven win two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, led the Bald Eagles to two straight Eastern Wresting League (EWL) team titles and powered LHU to back-to-back top-20 finishes at the NCAA Division I Tournament.

The senior trio of Shoop (141), Klucker (157) and Siegrist (175) was victorious tonight.

Klucker provided a huge spark with a dominating major decision at 157 pounds.

Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) opened the dual with another strong performance at 125 pounds, rounding out the Lock Haven winners. The junior – ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation – has won seven straight bouts and hasn't lost since the 2020 Southern Scuffle finals on January 2.

With the loss tonight, the Bald Eagles finished the dual season at .500 (7-7).

Werner, ranked No. 12 at 125 in the latest (Feb. 13) NCAA Division I Coaches' Panel Rankings, put Lock Haven up 3-0 in the dual after a 9-6 win over Cornell's Dom Lajoie. Werner scored a takedown off the opening whistle, led 4-2 after one period and dominated the third on the way to extending his win streak.

It was a battle of two of the nation's best 133 pounders, and in the end, it was Cornell's Chas Tucker – ranked No. 4 – who came out on top. Tucker scored a late first period takedown to extend his lead to 4-1 after one vs. No. 24 Fehlman. After neither wrester scored in the second, Fehlman went to work in the third and rode out the period. The Bald Eagle scored a point via Tucker's stalling in the third and Fehlman's dominance on top led to another point, but the two first period takedowns were enough to help Tucker escape with the win. Tucker's victory tied the dual at 3-3.

Shoop – ranked No. 22 at 141 – did his thing, much to the delight of the home fans. After a scoreless first period, Shoop took top to start the second and quickly turned Noah Baughman for four near fall points. Shoop led 4-0 after riding out the second period and powered his way to the 5-2 win. Shoop's win put Lock Haven back on top, 6-3.

At 149, Glorioso got the call on Senior Night and through two periods he looked poised for a major upset as No. 30 Hunter Richard clung to a 5-2 lead. Richard pulled away in the third and the major decision put Cornell up 7-6.

At 157, Klucker brought the crowd to its feet with an electrifying first period. He scored a quick takedown, racked up eight near fall points and led 10-1 after one period. A late third-period takedown helped Klucker secure the major over Cornell Adam Santoro, 14-1. Lock Haven was back on top of the dual at 10-7.

Cornell's Milik Dawkins downed Austin Bell (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) 13-6 at 165, and once again the meet was tied, 10-10.

Siegrist, a four-year starter for LHU, celebrated Senior Night with a thrilling win at 174. The Bald Eagle secured a late third-period takedown and knocked off Andrew Berreysa, 3-1. Once again, Lock Haven was on top of the dual at 13-10.

Cornell however, spoiled the party and won the final three bouts of the match.

At 184, No. 28 Jonathan Loew downed Hazel – ranked in some national polls – by major decision. For Hazel, his appearance in the lineup, should provide a postseason spark as he hadn't competed since January 1 at the Southern Scuffle.

Cornell's win at 184, 197 and 285 all came by way of bonus points. The Big Red posted a tech fall at 197 and a major at 285.

LHU will be right back on the mats tomorrow (Sunday, February 23) as the Bald Eagles host the Mat-Town Open II tournament. Action will start at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in Thomas Fieldhouse.
