WBB: Devine notches 1000th point as Bald Eagles down Mounties

Rileigh Devine recorded her 1000th point as the Lock Haven University women’s basketball team dominated Mansfield Wednesday evening

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (11-10, 7-8 PSAC East) downed Mansfield (3-19, 1-15 PSAC East) 69-50 in a road contest on Wednesday evening.

The Bald Eagles came out fast, grabbing an early lead over the Mounties before stringing together ten points in the final minutes of the first to take a 17-6 advantage in to the second period. Mansfield began to chip away at the lead in the second quarter, narrowing the deficit to six points as LHU took a 30-24 lead in to the half.

Lock Haven's offense exploded in the third quarter, as the Bald Eagles went on a 15-point run while holding Mansfield scoreless for nearly seven minutes. The Mounties recorded a few baskets in the final minutes of the third, but Lock Haven continued to hold on to its sizable lead, heading in to the final quarter up 53-32. LHU stayed toe-to-toe with Mansfield in the final period of play, securing the 69-50 victory.

Marena Lonardi (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) led the Bald Eagles with a season-high 26 points, knocking down a season-best 10 field goals and going an impressive 4-5 from the arc, yet another season-best for the freshman. Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) added 17 points while recording a career-high five steals, and Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) rounded out the top scorers, notching 10 points.

Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) led the team defensively, bringing down 10 rebounds in addition to recording a season-high six assists. Devine and Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) added seven rebounds apiece. Robinson continues to lead the PSAC with 211 rebounds (10.0/game) while her 4.3 offensive rebounds per game mark places her in the top 15 of NCAA DII Women's Basketball.

Devine's three-pointer with 6:07 left in the second quarter marked her 1,000th point as a member of the Bald Eagles. Devine is the second Lock Haven student-athlete to hit the historic milestone this season, as junior guard Matt Cerruti (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) recorded his 1,000th point earlier this season against Indiana (Pa.) on Jan. 3, 2020.

UP NEXT: LHU returns to action this Saturday (Feb. 8) when they face the Kutztown Golden Bears at Thomas Fieldhouse in Lock Haven. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
