Baseball splits doubleheader with UNC Pembroke to open 2020 season

The Lock Haven baseball team opened the 2020 season Saturday afternoon at UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Lock Haven baseball team (1-1) split Saturday's doubleheader with the University of North Carolina Pembroke (4-2), taking game one 4-3 before falling in game two 13-2.

GAME 1:
The Bald Eagles got on the board first, going ahead 2-0 in the top of the second. After Joe Zgleszewski (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was hit by a pitch and Colby Hiddemen (Honey Brook, Pa./Twin Valley) was walked, Joey Lowen (Pittsburgh/Mount Lebanon (Onondaga CC)) knocked a single down the third base line to load the bases. Freshman Gavin Troutman (Oley Valley, Pa./Catholic Oley Valley) stepped to the plate next, knocking a single to center field, his first as a Bald Eagle, to bring home Zgleszewski and Hiddmen and give Lock Haven the lead.

A bases loaded walk from Hiddeman in the third allowed Cameron Kutchey (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) to cross the plate, making it 3-0 Bald Eagles before the Braves added a run in the fourth to make it 3-1.

Back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice in the seventh brought Jake Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) to third base before a wild pitch brought him home to make it 4-1. A two-run home run from UNC Pembroke made it 4-3 after the seventh, but Devyn Fahnestock (Matamores, Pa./Delaware Valley) and Justin Lichtenwalner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) shut down the Braves offense to give LHU the 4-3 victory.

Starting pitcher Scott Leitholf (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) earned the win while Lichtenwalner earned his first save of the season. Isaac Porter (Beech Creek, Pa./St. Bonaventure) led the Bald Eagles offensively, going 4-5 with two doubles, while Lowen notched two hits.

GAME 2:
The Braves took an early lead, crossing the plate in the bottom of the first and scoring twice in the second to take a 3-0 lead on the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven began to chip away at the lead in the third, as Reagan Lawlor (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) hit a sacrifice fly to cross Lowen, who had advanced to third on a throwing error after being hit by a pitch to start the inning.

Quin Ambeault (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim (Frostburg)) led off the fifth with a double, crossing home to make it 3-2 on a ground out from Lawlor after a wild pitch allowed him to advance to third.

UNC Pembroke added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2, and brought home five runs in the seventh to push their lead to seven runs, going ahead 9-2. The Braves tacked on four more in the eighth and held off the Bald Eagles offense in the top of the ninth to take the 13-2 victory.

Avery Eddy (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs while walking three and striking out four across 5.0 innings of work.
