Softball earns comeback win, split in Florida

The LHU softball team picked up another split, thanks a comeback-win in the second outing of the day.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – For the third consecutive day, the Lock Haven University softball team battled to a split while playing in Florida. Lock Haven opened the day with an 8-1 loss to Minnesota State, before downing American International, 5-3 in come-from-behind fashion.
 
After today's games, LHU is 3-3 in Florida and the Bald Eagles are 6-8 overall on the season.
 
In the loss to Minnesota State, Lock Haven was led by Rachel Gricoski (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) who went 2 for 3 with a RBI.
 
Once again, Lock Haven came from behind and rallied for a 5-3 win over American International, which pushed the Bald Eagles to the Day 3 split. Playing as the home team. Lock Haven trailed 3-0 after one inning, but LHU tied the game at 3-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third and Lock Haven secured the win with two runs in the fifth.
 
Pitcher Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) struck out three in the win. She scattered eight hits and didn't allow a walk.
 
Leading the way at the plate in the victory was the duo of Sydney Arrigale (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) and Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty). Arrigale had the big bat in the win, going 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. She hit a solo home run in the fifth, a two-run homer. Ruppert was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
 
The Bald Eagles now have 12 home runs on the season.

The Bald Eagles will return to action on Friday, March 13 with games vs. Bemidji State and Ashland at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively.
