Softball opens Florida swing, splits

The LHU softball team opened a busy week in Florida with a Day 1 split, thanks to a 3-2 win over Rockhurst.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Lock Haven University softball team opened a busy stretch through Florida today (Mon., March 9) with a pair of games, and the Bald Eagles split. LHU fell to nationally-ranked Trevecca Nazarene, 10-1 (5 inn.), before earning the Day 1 split with a 3-2 victory over Rockhurst.

Today's games were the first two of 10 total to be played in the sunshine state as the Bald Eagles make their annual trip south to Florida over Spring Break for "The Spring Games" Tournament.

After today's games, LHU is 4-6 overall on the season.

LHU opened the day with a 10-1 loss (5 innings) to No. 10 Trevecca Nazarene. Lock Haven pitchers Madalyn Dydynski (Nichols, N.Y./Tioga Central) and Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) both saw action in the circle. Dydynski got the start and struck out one in two innings, while Gioglio threw the final three innings and struck out one as well. Gioglio forced six groundouts vs. the nationally-ranked opponent.

In the second game of the day, the Bald Eagles secured a win, downing Rockhurst, 3-2. Chloe Kennedy (Elkton, Md./Caravel Academy) doubled in a pair of runs and the LHU defense came up huge. Both catcher Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and shortstop Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) made sensational defensive plays, which certainly played a key role in winning the one-run game.

In the winning effort, Lock Haven's three runs came off four hits, all of which came from four different players. Playing as the home team, Rockhurst took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Lock Haven used a big fifth inning to secure the win. The Bald Eagles plated three in the top of the fifth behind Kennedy's two-run double. Pitcher Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) got the win and Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was credited with a save.
