Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer rallies late; Swartz OT-PK wins it

The LHU women’s soccer team tied the match late in regulation and Josie Swartz scored in OT as the Bald Eagles earned a thrilling home victory vs. Mansfield.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bald Eagles tied the match late in regulation and scored in overtime as the Lock Haven University women's soccer team (4-5-1, 2-5-1 PSAC East) earned a thrilling 2-1 comeback overtime-win over Mansfield University (1-7-2, 0-6-2 PSAC East) tonight at home in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.

Mayleigh Perkins (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) tied the game late in regulation and Josie Swartz (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) scored from the penalty spot late in the first overtime period to give LHU the exciting divisional victory.

Mansfield went up 1-0 in the 68th minute when Katelyn Rueppel converted a penalty kick.

After a spirited opening 45 minutes, the two teams remained scoreless at halftime. Both teams exchanged good scoring chances in the opening minutes, but the visitors created one of the best in the 11th minute, however LHU defender Taylor Moritz (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) cleared a ball off of the line at the near post.

Rueppel's converted penalty that beat Haven goalkeeper Kylie Auman (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) low and to the left looked as if it might be the difference in the outcome until the Bald Eagles drummed up some late-match heroics.

With just 3:23 left in regulation, the Bald Eagles tied the match at 1-1.

Perkins volleyed home a perfect crossing-pass from Sydney Stahl (Pittsburgh/Keystone Oaks) in the 87th minute for the equalizer.

Late in the first OT period, Hunter McClellan (Grantville Summit, Pa./Troy) earned a penalty for Lock Haven and Swartz left no doubt as she fired the ball home - just under the crossbar - for the victory.

Auman's one save proved huge in the tightly-contested contest.

LHU will return to action on the home turf on Wednesday, October 13 at 5 p.m. vs. PSAC East foe Millersville University.
